Jason Statham's "brilliant" thriller with Vicky McClure lands new UK streaming home

Translate

Hummingbird has found itself a new streaming home in the UK. The 2013 thriller directed by Peaky Blinders creator and new James Bond franchise helmer Steven Knight stars Jason Statham as a former Special Forces solider who became an alcohol addict living on the streets of London. He seeks revenge against a criminal gang after one of his friends goes missing.

Line of Duty's Vicky McClure, Doctor Strange's Benedict Wong, Poldark's Christian Brassington and Polish actor Agata Buzek also star.

Hummingbird, known as Redemption in the US, was already available to stream on ITVX in the UK, but now it's been added to the Sky and NOW libraries with the right Cinema subscription.

As Knight's directorial feature debut, it's perhaps not surprising that it didn't receive the same amount of acclaim as other projects like Locke, SAS Rogue Heroes or A Thousand Blows.

The movie sits at a 50% positive critic score on Rotten Tomatoes from 50 collected reviews.

The Guardian called it "flawed but ambitious (and rather peculiar)" with "many oddly upturned generic tropes", while Vulture dubbed it a "wildly imperfect movie [that] appears to have a rare soul lurking inside it".

"Hummingbird's richly nutty premise grips from moment to moment," wrote The Telegraph, adding, "and Statham bolsters his reputation as master of the absurdist threat".

The audience response skews more positive than the split right down the middle critical reception, with a 6.2 average score out of 10 over on IMDb from 83,000 user ratings.

One fan wrote "Hummingbird is a brilliant achievement, injected with emotion, tension, love and passion" but also noted: "A longer running time and better focus on the more thrilling aspects of the story would make it overall more effective."

Hummingbird can be streamed now on ITVX and Sky/NOW Cinema.
