GPL 2026/27: Asante Kotoko fight back to hold AshantiGold in derby

Translate

Asante Kotoko came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against FC AshantiGold 04 at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi in the Ghana Premier League.

Kotoko travelled to Obuasi seeking consecutive league victories after beating Young Apostles 2-1, but had to settle for a point against an AshantiGold side that had won all three of their home matches since gaining promotion to the top flight.

The hosts took the lead shortly before half-time when Samuel Fosu Boateng's long-range strike took a slight deflection off Joseph Amoah before finding the back of the net.

Kotoko goalkeeper Aziz Dari Haruna had earlier kept his side in the contest with a fine save, ensuring the visitors went into the break trailing by just one goal.

AshantiGold resumed the second half looking to protect their advantage, but Kotoko found a way back into the game through Asiedu.

The midfielder produced a powerful free-kick in the 63rd minute to beat the AshantiGold goalkeeper and bring the visitors level, giving the Porcupine Warriors renewed hope of completing a comeback.

Both sides subsequently searched for a winner, with AshantiGold threatening to regain the lead.

However, Haruna came to Kotoko's rescue again in the 79th minute with another important save to deny the hosts.

Neither team could find a decisive goal in the closing stages, leaving the contest level at 1-1.

The result extends Kotoko's winless run away from home in the league to four matches, having entered the encounter without a victory in their previous three away fixtures.

For AshantiGold, the draw ends their run of three consecutive home victories since returning to the top flight.

The two sides went into the match separated by just one point, with Kotoko on 12 points in eighth place and AshantiGold on 11 points in 10th position.

Kotoko will now turn their attention to a meeting with league leaders Medeama, while AshantiGold prepare to face Swedru All Blacks in their next league fixture.
