Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption is a near-flawless open-world epic that balances its linear mission structure with a gorgeous sandbox open world teeming with roleplay opportunities. Minecraft, on the other hand, is really only the latter, and even then it's so free-form that one would struggle to find a singular objective to focus on beyond their own creative ambitions. That's not a slight against either game, mind, but merely to point out that the two, while similar in superficial respects, offer vastly different experiences.
Combining the two, then, must be a particularly prickly proposition, right? Well, somewhat, although one developer has seen fit to merge the action-packed, Wild West-hopping spectacle of Red Dead Redemption with the aforementioned freedom Minecraft so wonderfully provides. The outcome is a surprisingly enjoyable experience, a game like Minecraft and Red Dead that illustrates how two discordant components can coalesce to create something beautiful if molded with the right hands.
Craft of Redemption Is The Perfect Wild West Simulator
The aptly titled Craft of Redemption is a modpack for Minecraft that completely overhauls the base experience to offer something far more akin to Red Dead Redemption. It, according to the developer, "brings the Wild West to Minecraft with action, exploration, and multiplayer," offering an unprecedented RDR2-inspired roleplaying experience within Minecraft's boundless universe. Suffice it to say, it's the best we'll get as we perpetually wait for the next official Red Dead Redemption installment.
Craft of Redemption is a rather inspired mod, one that aims to replicate the success of the many great Minecraft mods before it by delivering gameplay that feels far removed from Minecraft's conventional survival crafting fare while never deviating so far that one feels as if it's lost its luster. You can explore a vast, Wild West open-world teeming with settlements, frontier towns, stunning mountainscapes, rolling dunes, and, naturally, outlaws out for blood.
Craft of Redemption's biggest addition, by far, to the Minecraft sandbox is the inclusion of a gun, one that fits within the game's blocky aesthetic while still exuding the kind of Clint Eastwood cool one would hope for from a cowboy's revolver. There are numerous guns on offer, all of which come with a satisfying kick whenever you're blasting outlaws to pieces, and can naturally be used in first or third-person. Coupled with the inclusion of multiplayer, more punishing survival mechanics, improved wildlife, and immersive roleplaying, Craft of Redemption truly offers the ultimate Wild West experience within Minecraft.
Craft of Redemption Is Free-To-Play
The best part about Craft of Redemption is that it is completely free. Like all modpacks, you simply need to download it and add it to your copy of Minecraft. If you don't already own Minecraft, then it technically isn't free; however, at that point, you have the great pleasure of finally playing Minecraft, and that's a huge win in its own right. If you're interested, you can download Craft of Redemption from its official CurseForge page.
While Craft of Redemption is enjoyable solo and can be played in its entirety as such, it excels when played with friends, much like base Minecraft. Many of its systems rely on roleplaying, which is far easier to do alongside others than it is with the in-game villagers.
It continues to astound just how creative Minecraft modders can be, the worlds that they create and the systems they implement. Craft of Redemption is merely scratching the surface of what's available, but it is a good illustration of the levels of mastery and ingenuity on display. Fans of both Red Dead Redemption and Minecraft should absolutely give this one a go, especially if they've been looking for an immersive roleplaying experience they can enjoy with friends.
