Genoa got their first point of the season despite Lorenzo Colombo’s missed penalty, as Frosinone and Giorgi Kvernadze keep their strong start going.

This was on paper a relegation dogfight, but the Grifone were rock bottom on zero points, whereas the Canarini had back-to-back victories over Fiorentina and Venezia. Lorenzo Venturino, Elias Havel and Joe Nuredini missed out for the hosts, while Florian Grillitsch didn’t make the trip over a muscular issue. Fares Ghedjemis was slowly being welcomed back after failing to force a summer transfer and got his first start of the season.

See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

Tommaso Baldanzi had the ball in the net after seven minutes when sweeping in first-time from 12 yards, but Mikel Ellertsson was offside on the assist from the left.

Instead, Frosinone took the lead with their first real scoring opportunity. A long ball was flicked on in midfield and Romano Schmid timed the slide-rule pass perfectly, but Giorgi Kvernadze skinned Alessandro Marcandalli by taking a touch to cut inside, sending him clear on goal.

Baldanzi’s angled drive was palmed round the post, while Giacomo Calò saw his curler skim the upright from the edge of the area for the Canarini.

There were Genoa penalty appeals for a Baldini shot that was charged down by Giorgio Cittadini’s arm. Although under new rules they are far more generous in these situations, it still warranted a VAR review and the first penalty of the Serie A season was assigned. We’ll have to wait a while longer for the first penalty converted, because Lorenzo Colombo side-footed it wide of the target.

Genoa did get their equaliser when Johan Vasquez peeled away from his marker to volley in a Djibril Sow corner at the near post from 12 yards with the right boot.

Stephan El Shaarawy made his Grifone comeback after 16 years at his hometown club, but Kvernadze’s volley was acrobatically palmed out from under the bar by Justin Bijlow.

Colombo stung Palmisani’s gloves from distance, and the goalkeeper got down quickly to deny Vitinha at the near stick, but Genoa were reduced to 10 men as Vasquez received a second yellow card for dragging back Seydou Fini.

Frosinone had the chance to win it in stoppages, but debutant Bobcek’s free header on a corner was clawed off the line by Bijlow.
