Cynthia Nixon Says She ‘Loved’ Miranda’s Attempts to Become ‘Woke’ on ‘And Just Like That’ Despite Fans Being ‘Horrified’

Cynthia Nixon is standing by her “Sex and the City” character Miranda Hobbes’ arc in the chaotic reboot “And Just Like That” — despite how bewildering some fans found it.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, the actress explained that despite the fact that the show’s viewers “were so horrified by [Miranda’s] sadness and alcoholism and awkwardness at trying to become a woke person at this advanced age,” that was what she appreciated most about the character. “I loved that,” she said.

While Hobbes underwent several personal shifts in the reboot of the iconic 6 Season HBO drama, the most contentious point for audiences was her relationship with comedian Che Diaz, whom she left her husband, Steve Brady, for in Season 1. In the original series, Hobbes, a lawyer, met Brady, a bartender, in Season 2, then broke up, ultimately got back together, got married, and welcomed a child, Brady Hobbes, by the show’s end.

Nixon also spoke of how she was swayed to reprise the role of Hobbes in the reboot to begin with. “I became convinced that we could really do interesting, dangerous things,” she said. “And that we could make up for some of our past mistakes, the chief one being that it was such an overwhelmingly white show.” And while reactions to the show were always a mixed bag, Nixon admits she was caught off guard when she learned “And Just Like That” wouldn’t be returning for a fourth season: “I was not at all ready,” she said. “Not at all.”

Currently, Nixon stars in HBO’s historical drama “The Gilded Age” as Ada Forte. The show debuted in Jan. 2022 and has run for three subsequent seasons. Season 4 premiered on Sunday on HBO and HBO Max.

Despite the success of “The Gilded Age,” though, Nixon noted that “Miranda seems to eclipse everything else” she’s done, even 22 years after “Sex and the City” finished airing in 2004.
