‘Dreamgirls’ First-Ever Broadway Revival Postponed Beyond Fall 2026

The first-ever Dreamgirls revival, originally planned for a fall 2026 Broadway staging, has been postponed. New dates, cast and venue have not yet been announced.

News of the postponement was first reported by People magazine. In a statement to People, producers said, “The new Broadway production of Dreamgirls, directed and choreographed by Camille A. Brown, is absolutely moving forward. As with any major Broadway production, schedules evolve as the various elements come together, and the production will no longer open in Fall 2026.

“We look forward to announcing the theatre, dates and casting when they are confirmed,” the statement continues.

With book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger, the Dreamgirls revival was announced last year, with the projected start date of fall 2026. The production has new direction and choreography by Brown (Broadway’s Choir Boy and for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf); Michael Bennett directed and choreographed the 1981 original that launched the career of Jennifer Holliday.

In February, producers Sonia Friedman Productions, Sue Wagner and John Johnson announced that Jennifer Hudson, who won an Academy Award for her portrayal of the musical’s Effie White in Bill Condon’s 2006 film adaptation, was joining their producing team. “This fall cannot come soon enough,” Hudson said at the time.

The musical tells the story of the Dreamettes, a singing trio of young friends from Chicago who strike it big – and endure the joys and tribulations fame and success bring – after they catch the attention of car salesman turned show biz manager Curtis Taylor Jr. The story is a fictionalized take on the Supremes, with a character named Deena Jones standing in for Diana Ross, Effie White (the character originally played by Holliday who became an overnight star with the showstopping “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going”) based on the pushed-aside Florence Ballard, and Lorrell Robinson repping Mary Wilson. The Curtis Taylor Jr. character is based on Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr.
