Wildfire activity surges in Indonesia's Central Kalimantan: BNPB

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported a sharp increase in wildfire hotspots and affected land in Central Kalimantan, the hardest-hit of 10 provinces under national monitoring.
“Central Kalimantan is the most concerning area in our national monitoring, with conditions worsening today,” BNPB Acting Head of Disaster Data, Information and Communication Berton Panjaitan said here Thursday.
Central Kalimantan recorded 821 hotspots, up 93 percent from the previous day, while 1,641 hectares of land were under fire response operations, an increase of 147 percent.
“Compared with the previous day, Central Kalimantan now has 821 hotspots, up 93 percent, and 1,641 hectares under response operations. Active fire locations increased 62 percent,” Berton said.
BNPB's Operations Control Directorate reported 1,468 hotspots nationwide on Nov. 5, with joint task force teams handling fires across 2,645 hectares.
East Kalimantan also recorded an increase in active fire locations, rising 53 percent.
By contrast, fire activity declined in South Papua, East Nusa Tenggara, Southeast Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung Islands, West Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku.
The declines ranged from 20 percent to 50 percent, Berton said.
He added that rainfall spreading across areas affected by forest and land fires had also influenced the distribution of hotspots and active fires.
