Rough seas warning: Check tides before heading to the coast

Coastal residents and visitors planning trips to the beach this weekend should keep an eye on both the weather and tide times as windy conditions and rough seas affect parts of the coast.

A Yellow Level 1 warning for winds and waves is in place between Table Bay and Cape Agulhas from Saturday to Sunday, with conditions expected to make navigation difficult and put small vessels at risk of capsizing.

The cut-off low developing west of the country will affect the Western and Northern Cape from Sunday into Monday, bringing intermittent showers and thundershowers, which could become heavy at times.

The system could also produce small hail, lightning, windy conditions and very rough seas, with waves reaching 4 to 4.5 metres south of Table Bay.

Tide times can help beachgoers, anglers and other coastal visitors plan their activities around changing sea levels.

Spring tides are also expected along the coast, bringing higher-than-usual high tides and lower-than-usual low tides.
