BUTTERWORTH: A tour guide was sentenced to eight months' jail after pleading guilty to possessing imitation firearm components at a car rental premises.

Magistrate Aini Adilah Muhammad Faizal sentenced S. Leynon, 33, to eight months' imprisonment, effective from his arrest on Oct 1.

He was charged with possessing several imitation firearm components, including a silver barrel component, another silver firearm component and two black magazines containing six and one bullet respectively.

The offence was committed at a car rental premises in Jalan New Ferry here between Sept 1 and 30.

The charge was framed under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, which carries a maximum jail term of one year, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Zhan Yi urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence, while Leynon sought leniency, citing his family responsibilities and modest income.

The court was told that Leynon was married with six children and worked as a tour guide, earning about RM2,000 a month.

In a separate proceeding at the Sessions Court, Leynon pleaded not guilty to two other charges involving possession of a 52cm-long parang without lawful excuse and 110g of cannabis.

The alleged offences took place in a hotel room in Jalan Icon City, Bukit Mertajam, at about 6pm on Oct 1.

The charge involving the possession of a parang was brought under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, which carries a jail term of between five and 10 years upon conviction.

Meanwhile, the charge involving cannabis was brought under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and is punishable under Section 39A(2) of the same Act.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Izzat Firdaus did not offer bail, seeking time to appoint counsel and obtain a chemical analysis report.

Sessions Court judge Roslan Hamid denied bail and fixed Dec 10 for mention, pending the report and other documents, as well as the appointment of counsel.
