How to watch Resident Evil – is it streaming?

Translate

The hit Resident Evil video game series has been adapted for the big screen no less than seven times previously – as well as for TV in 2022 – and now, it's Weapons director Zach Cregger's turn to take on the zombie survival franchise.

Set firmly in the horror genre, Cregger's take, partly based on the second game in the series, will follow Bryan, a medical courier who must fight for survival after Raccoon City citizens are transformed into zombies.

According to Polygon, Cregger's Resident Evil has been designed with fans of the games in mind, as the writer-director has reportedly not even seen the previous films from the franchise.

Part of evoking this video game feeling comes from the cinematography – the new movie will feature over-the-shoulder third-person camera angles as well as first-person shots, to really give it that action shooter feeling.

Resident Evil will be releasing in the UK very shortly. Read on to find out all you need to know about how and where to watch it.

No, Resident Evil is not streaming yet – and won't be for quite some time.

For now, the only way to watch the film will be in cinemas when it releases on Friday 18 September – so there's not long to wait.

And luckily, the film is getting a very wide release, so you shouldn't have a tough time finding a showing that works for you. Just check the schedule at your local cinema!

However, the film's predecessor, Resident Evil (2002), is currently available to stream on Prime Video. Additionally, the 2022 TV adaptation can be streamed on Netflix.

Resident Evil cast – who stars in the film?

Resident Evil has a small main cast, with only a few names revealed.

Austin Abrams, who previously worked with Cregger on Weapons – and who is no stranger to the zombie genre, having played a recurring character in the fifth and sixth seasons of The Walking Dead – stars as Bryan, the central medical courier.

Additionally, Paul Walter Hauser, who has starred in almost everything from Jackass to The Fantastic Four in recent years, will appear as Carl, a scientist.

You can see the full list of confirmed cast below:

  • Austin Abrams as Bryan
  • Paul Walter Hauser as Carl
  • Zach Cherry as Dave
  • Kali Reis as Pauline
  • Johnno Wilson as Max
  • Shaun W Loeser as Puker

While the new movie is based around elements from the second instalment in the video game series, the characters and plot are mostly new, set against a backdrop of events from the game.

However, the film is set in the present day, setting it apart from the 1998 game and refreshing parts of the narrative for a 2026 audience.

According to Screen Rant, Cregger has stated that his Resident Evil movie "could live in the world of Resident Evil and be maybe on the periphery of Resident Evil 2 ... but tell[s] another story that could be happening in parallel to that that really honours the vibe and the pacing that you get when you play the games".

All we know so far is that Bryan (Austin Abrams) is a medical courier who's making a delivery to Raccoon City when the zombie outbreak occurs. It's then up to Bryan to fend for himself and survive.
