Susan Sarandon arrested during protest against Israel’s prime minister

Hollywood actor Susan Sarandon and Hacks star Hannah Einbinder have been arrested while taking part in a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York.

The pair were part of Jewish Voice for Peace, a demonstration of hundreds of people who assembled outside the United Nations General Assembly in Manhattan, as Netanyahu gave an address as the building on Thursday (September 24). The protest against the politician was due to Israel’s military actions in Gaza, and various press agencies captured Oscar winner Sarandon and Emmy winner Einbinder being led away by police.

Footage shows Sarandon walking away in handcuffs, wearing a t-shirt that read: “Fund People Not Bombs”. Einbinder was also captured being led away by police, shouting to onlookers “Netanyahu out of New York!”

The Guardian quoted an NYPD spokesperson who said that police had responded to an “unscheduled demonstration” which was blocking an intersection. “Members of the NYPD Community Affairs Bureau issued … warnings, advising participants that they should leave,” the statement continued. “They continued to block the intersection. Multiple individuals who didn’t comply were taken into custody.”

Einbinder commented on the incident on an Instagram story, which has been shared elsewhere on social media. Her statement read: “If the pictures of my friends and me getting arrested in protest of Netanyahu’s shameful visit to New York draw attention to anything, let it be to the devastating genocidal war Israel is waging against the people of Palestine and Southern Lebanon – to the settler attacks, the home demolitions, the bombing of people as they sleep; to the crimes that happen every single day but garner almost no international press coverage.”

While she is yet to comment publicly on the arrest, earlier this month Susan Sarandon revealed that she has lost film roles because of her support for Palestine. 

The actors are one of several celebrities who have recently spoken out in support of Palestine, with Macklemore recently making headlines after being removed from Ed Sheeran’s tour after making a statement in support of the country. Recently, he unveiled the ‘Free Palestine Tour’ in UK and Europe. He’ll be joined by “artists who have shown up and used their stages to stand in solidarity”, with all proceeds benefiting organisations supporting the Palestinian people
