2026 has two different perfect Resident Evil movies that have released this year, making the franchise all the more interesting to be a fan of during this time. Over the course of Resident Evil's decades of history, we've gotten plenty of movies delving into the dark and beloved zombie-infested world it revolves around, albeit to mixed results.
Many of Resident Evil's movies have struggled with the task of adapting the games into movie shape, particularly given the way in which the games are able to blend horror and comedy moments to build and release tension in a way that keeps players hooked. Mercifully, 2026 offers a different result for the franchise, thanks to two different films based around Resident Evil.
Though only one of these is an official release, both delve into the mythos of Resident Evil in engaging ways, and highlight why the game series has been such an iconic cornerstone of the horror genre for so many years - with their differing approaches to adapting the games and their lore making them all the more interesting to look at side by side.
2026 Now Has One Official Resident Evil Movie, And One Exciting Fan Film
Of course, 2026's main movie addition for the Resident Evil franchise has been that of the Resident Evil movie itself, which released this September to considerable positive reception both in terms of its review scores, and in terms of its box office gross. However, Resident Evil isn't technically the only film to have released exploring this lore this year.
October 2026 has also brought us a strikingly interesting Resident Evil fan film in the form of Biohazard, which adapts the story of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, and reimagines the video game narrative in movie format.
Though unofficial, Biohazard has some recognizable names and faces behind it, with The Walking Dead's Carl Grimes actor Chandler Riggs writing and directing the movie as well as starring in it, and Jason Douglas - who played The Walking Dead's Tobin - acting alongside him as central antagonist of sorts Jack Baker.
2026's Resident Evil Movies Show Off Different Sides Of The Franchise
With one official movie and one unofficial movie exploring Resident Evil's world this year, it's perhaps no surprise these two different films delve into different sides of the franchise.
This is most clear given the way in which the two stories look to adapt the iconic horror game series, since Biohazard is a more direct adaptation of Resident Evil 7 - adapting its narrative and setting most directly - and serves as a love letter to one of the most popular recent games in the series, giving it a unique sense of watch value for fans.
Inversely, Resident Evil takes a broader approach with its own adaptation of the game lore and mythos, both in how it explores the idea of the infection in Raccoon City, and in terms of how it provides playful nods to the games, such as protagonist Bryan finding himself dealing with one of Resident Evil's characteristic lock puzzles when he tries to escape a farm towards the start of the movie.
These two differing approaches allow the two film narratives to be very different even as they explore the same franchise, with both providing engaging explorations of the Resident Evil video game world that are sure to delight game fans and horror movie fans in equal measure.
