DC Studios Officially Finds The Perfect Lanterns Replacement

Felipe is a writer who is an avid film and TV fan, with superhero movies and series being his biggest passion. He graduated from college in 2019, having studied Journalism. Before college, he spent a month studying at the Oxford English Centre. His superhero knowledge expands to the comics, with his undergraduate thesis being "Politics Reflected In American Comics."

Lanterns is one of the most interesting DC projects in years, and with season 1 already over, the studio has already found its perfect replacement. James Gunn's DCU is shaping up to be a unique universe with a plurality of tones and genres, always keeping it fresh. Major heroes have already made their DCU debuts, including Superman, Supergirl, and multiple Green Lanterns.

The franchise is also confirmed to introduce more key heroes before the DCU Chapter One is over, as Batman's The Brave and the Bold movie, with Batman casting not too long away, according to Gunn in The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? The Official Podcast, and Wonder Woman's DCU reboot movie are currently in development.

That said, the latest major heroes to enter the DCU were Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre's John Stewart on HBO's Lanterns. Their dynamic was the best part of the live-action DC series, which merged sci-fi elements with a gritty mystery on Earth and different timelines in the vein of True Detective. Lanterns also featured another beloved hero.

That would be Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner, who made his DCU debut in 2025's Superman movie. Both Fillion's Guy and Pierre's John will return to the franchise in 2027's Man of Tomorrow, Gunn's Superman sequel. That said, there is another DC project Green Lantern fans should keep an eye on, as it will soon make company to Lanterns as a DC Studios Green Lantern series.

Lanterns might be the only live-action Green Lantern series planned at DC Studios for now, but the space cops are coming back through animation. Set outside the canon of Gunn's DCU, being part of a new animated DC shared universe started by Jack Quaid's My Adventures with Superman, is the upcoming My Adventures with Green Lantern. Rather than be focused on Hal Jordan, John Stewart, or Guy Gardner, the new animated DC series follows a Green Lantern that is not yet part of Gunn's DCU, Jessica Cruz, who is a teenager.

Those waiting for more Green Lantern adventures onscreen recently got an exciting My Adventures with Green Lantern update from none other than DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, who told Collider that the team at DC is currently "reviewing animatics and animation" on the new superhero series, meaning development on the show is well underway. Additionally, "10 half-hour episodes" are planned for the first season of the Green Lantern series, which fits right in with the shared universe's flagship series, My Adventures with Superman, which has released three seasons so far, with the latest marking the debut of Auli'i Cravalho's Jessica Cruz in a cameo role.

My Adventures With Green Lantern Will Explore A Different Side Of Green Lantern Lore

Green Lantern Jessica Cruz

Lanterns is a grounded and gritty DC series. Even though it does feature cosmic elements, such as Hal and John visiting other planets, aliens becoming threats, and the Green Lantern ring's constructs, to name a few, the show was still darker and more "realistic" than what one would normally expect from a TV show focused on two Green Lantern Corps members. My Adventures with Green Lantern will come to give fans a completely different experience. The show comes from a more fantastical universe and vibrant tone compared to Lanterns, so it should be a more action-packed and cosmic type of DC series.

After all, My Adventures with Superman has shown what fans should expect from the new Green Lantern series, as Jack Quaid's Superman is constantly fighting technologically enhanced villains, deals with time travel, and explores his powers and intergalactic threats. My Adventures with Green Lantern sees Jessica start a new Green Lantern Corps when a power ring finds its way to her and the teenager must deal with remnants of the Lanterns' ancient space war, with cosmic villains coming to Earth.

Somewhat similar to Lanterns is the fact that it seems like Hal is dead in the show, as Jessica studies at Hal Jordan Memorial High, where Kyle Rayner, a famous Green Lantern from DC Comics, is also a student in the animated series. My Adventures with Green Lantern is the more fantastical Green Lantern series that many wanted HBO's Lanterns to be, and the fact that it is progressing nicely is exciting.
