Harry Kane celebrates after scoring against the Czech Republic on his record-equalling 125th appearance for England

Bayern Munich won 3-1 at Freiburg to return to the top of the Bundesliga, as the German champions paid tribute to absent manager Vincent Kompany.

The 40-year-old, who played for Manchester City for 11 years and then managed Burnley, was taken to hospital on Friday after he collapsed while watching Bayern's second team train.

Before Sunday's match, Bayern fans unveiled a banner that translated as 'Get well soon, Vincent - we are by your side'.

Dayot Upamecano put Bayern ahead when he raced on to Michael Olise's pass from the halfway line and finished superbly, before Serge Gnabry added a second just before half-time after good work from Nathaniel Brown.

Freiburg pulled a goal back with eight minutes left through an own goal from Bayern's Tom Bischof, but Olise sealed Bayern's victory by adding a third in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Bayern have won the Bundesliga in the past two seasons and this victory takes them back above Borussia Dortmund on goal difference after Niko Kovac's side had defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 on Saturday.

On Sunday, Bayern assistant coach Aaron Danks gave an update on Kompany's condition and said: "The feedback is really positive at the moment. He's stable [in hospital], he's doing well. He feels a little better every day.

"They are continuing to conduct tests, but the signs are really positive."

On Saturday, Bayern director of sport Max Eberl said Kompany would not be on the touchline for the near future and added: "We need to firstly figure out what it is and then we'll discuss calmly what the recovery time is to be. We won't be talking about days, but weeks. We need to all be clear on that."

Eberl added that Bayern had considered asking to postpone the game at Freiburg, but believed the best tonic for Kompany would be to "play and be successful".

Bayern were captained by England striker Harry Kane, who on Monday might become the first English player since Michael Owen in 2001 to win the Ballon d'Or - awarded to the best player in world football over the past 12 months.
