Republican lawmakers are questioning Elon Musk's decision to restrict Ukraine's access to SpaceX's (SPCX) Starlink satellite communications network, raising concerns about the country's dependence on a single private company for critical military technology.
Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Texas, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, challenged Musk's explanation that Ukraine violated Starlink's terms of service by using the system to conduct offensive drone attacks. In an interview with Bloomberg This Weekend on Sunday, Crenshaw said Ukraine's military has long relied on drones to defend its territory against Russian forces.
For investors, the controversy highlights the geopolitical and regulatory risks associated with SpaceX's (SPCX) expanding role in military communications and national security infrastructure. The dispute could intensify scrutiny of the company's government contracts while encouraging the Pentagon and allied governments to invest in alternative satellite networks to reduce their dependence on a single provider.
The dispute erupted after SpaceX (SPCX) restricted operating speeds on Starlink and its military-grade Starshield system, disrupting Ukrainian drone operations. Ukraine's Defense Ministry said Saturday that normal speeds had been restored, while Musk said his company had closed a loophole that permitted offensive drone strikes. He also emphasized that the U.S. government controls Starshield.
Musk subsequently cited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's acknowledgment that Starlink supports strikes against Russian military targets in occupied Ukrainian territory. Crenshaw countered that such operations are part of Ukraine's defense against Russia's invasion.
Sen. Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican, also criticized the disruption, questioning why a communications system essential to Ukraine's defense could be affected by decisions made by a single corporate executive. Crenshaw similarly warned that the absence of viable alternatives to SpaceX (SPCX) represents a strategic vulnerability.
The controversy has also strained relations between Washington and Kyiv. President Donald Trump reportedly asked Musk to restore Starlink capabilities after the restrictions became public, according to The Wall Street Journal. Trump has denied ordering the slowdown and has criticized Zelenskyy amid broader disagreements over the war.
The satellite dispute comes as Trump faces criticism over an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to refrain from imposing additional sanctions on Moscow in exchange for limited diesel supplies intended to ease global fuel prices. Zelenskyy has accused the administration of pressuring Ukraine to make concessions to Russia, further complicating U.S. efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict.
