New MyKad to be issued from today

THE National Registration Department (NRD) will begin issuing the new generation of MyKad boasting 53 security features, up from 23 previously, starting today.

The NRD said the new MyKad was an evolution of the national identity document aimed at keeping pace with changing times.

It added that 40 NRD branches had been equipped with printing facilities to issue the new MyKad.

"After more than two decades, the time has come for a new generation to take its place, bringing improvements to the MyKad's design, structure and security features."

The enhancements include a QR code for verification and enforcement purposes, hologram technology, microtext, ultraviolet security features, laser engraving and a chip with higher encryption capabilities.

The new MyKad is expected to boost identity verification while reducing the risk of forgery and misuse.

It was previously reported that the new MyKad would be available at the NRD headquarters in Putrajaya and 18 selected NRD offices by appointment, before being rolled out nationwide in stages.

The phased approach is aimed at ensuring a smooth and orderly implementation while avoiding congestion at NRD counters.
