A founding X-Men hero has been away from the team for several years, off on a solo adventure in deep space, but now it is finally time for a dramatic reunion.
Author Jed MacKay spoke with AIPT for this week’s X-Men Monday about DNX, the crossover with major consequences Marvel has just announced for its mutant heroes. As well as what is coming after that. And in the wake of DNX, it seems that the X-Men are going to need one of their biggest powerhouses: the Phoenix.
Jean Grey just made her MCU debut in Spider-Man: Brand New Day as a conflicted young character, on the precipice of villainy rather than heroism. In Marvel Comics canon, Jean is a veteran mutant hero, and one of the most powerful characters in the Universe. That makes her a tricky character to write as part of a team book, but Jed MacKay is eager to try.
Jean will star in a new solo limited series this fall, written by MacKay, which will bring the character back to Earth after her recent cosmic journey, reunite her with her husband Cyclops, and reintegrate her into the X-Men fold moving forward post-DNX.
Marvel Is Bringing Jean Grey Back To Earth & Making Her A Major Player In X-Men Again
X-Men Writer Jed MacKay On What To Expect From Jean In Late 2026
In 2024, Marvel ended X-Men’s Krakoan Era and relaunched the franchise with a new slate of books under the banner “From the Ashes.” This was particularly apt for Jean Grey, who got her own Phoenix solo title, which embraced the cosmic side of her heroic identity, the embodiment of the fiery Phoenix Force, and took the character on an intergalactic odyssey.
It was a good creative move for Jean, and for her husband Scott Summers back on Earth. Separating the characters gave both some room to grow independently, for better or worse. Which is going to bring something refreshing to their dynamic when they are reunited, which X-writer Jed McKay promises is coming soon. Refreshing for readers, but maybe not for the mutant power couple. Here’s what MacKay teased fans should expect from the new Jean Grey five-issue series:
We’re going to see Jean come home, and find her place in the world, and more specifically, find her place in Alaska. We’re going to see the differences in her philosophy and Scott’s—most tellingly, she’s not going to live in the Factory, choosing instead to cross the barriers and live amongst the people of Merle. Scott builds fortresses, because that’s who he is, but Jean builds bridges, because that’s who she is.
In other words, Jean's return to Earth feels like the ticking clock on tension in her marriage to X-Men leader Cyclops.
The implication here is that while Jean will be rejoining the X-Men, she won't be entirely on board with how Cyclops has been running the team in her absence. Starting in late 2026 and playing out through 2027 and beyond, Jean Grey has the opportunity to become a leading voice for mutantkind in this new era; in fact, to really take on the role she should have had in X-Men lore all along.
Could Jean Grey's Latest Comeback Cost Her & Cyclops Their Relationship?
Jean Is Poised To Become A Mutant Leader, But There Will Be Consequences
Jean Grey's Marvel Comics history is turbulent. She was the first original X-Men hero to be "permanently" killed off, until she was brought back by editorial fiat. And it wouldn't be the last time. Jean's most iconic death came at the climax of Grant Morrison's New X-Men run, a storyline that is nearly 25-years-old itself. Overall, her frequent intervals of comic book death have impeded Jean from taking on a sustained leadership role for mutantkind.
That might finally be happening in Jed MacKay's X-Men, but it isn't going to be without growing pains. Because one leading figure in mutantkind that she's going to have to push back against is her husband. That equates to a powerful mix of personal and heroic drama, once more making Jean Grey one of Marvel's most important and exciting X-Men characters.
What do you think, X-fans? Are you excited for Jean to be back on Earth? How do you think it will play out?
