RI Govt steps up halal certification support for small firms

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Industry Ministry of is expanding halal-certification support for small industrial businesses as it seeks to strengthen the competitiveness of its growing halal industry and expand access to domestic and global markets.

The ministry operates 22 halal inspection bodies, including 15 primary bodies with national and international coverage, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said in a statement confirmed here Friday.

The ministry also oversees four halal-product facilitation bodies, five halal training institutes and three professional certification bodies for halal-industry professionals across Indonesia.

The ministry plans to facilitate halal certification for 12,171 recipients in 2026, with small businesses among its main targets, Agus said.

Indonesia’s domestic market provides substantial potential, with Muslim household consumption reaching Rp5,974.9 trillion, or about US$326 billion, in the first half of 2026.

Indonesia’s Muslim population also supports the market, accounting for more than 87 percent of the population, or about 252.8 million people.

Indonesia ranked fourth in the global halal economy ecosystem in the State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2025/26, behind Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

The ranking assesses five areas: Islamic finance, halal regulation, public awareness, social impact and innovation.

The minister said Indonesia’s halal industry has maintained positive growth, with millions of industrial businesses now holding halal certification.

By the end of the first half of 2026, 2.67 million industrial businesses had secured halal certification, according to ministry data.

Halal-certified businesses included 2.32 million in food, 342,090 in beverages, and 5,341 in chemicals, pharmaceuticals and traditional medicines.
