Tetsuya Chiba-sensei has passed away.
I can't believe it since he was so full of energy when we spoke in February.
My beginnings were with the Tetsuya Chiba Award, and Chiba-sensei watched over me since my debut.
Chiba-sensei's contributions to the manga industry are unparalleled I can't express my gratitude.
Sensei, thank you for everything.

Harumi Ichiryūsai

I offer my heartfelt condolences🙏
I'm shocked because I always say Tetsuya Chiba-sensei as pratically immortal😭
He was a kind person.
When I became an apprentice of Teisui [Ichiryūsai], even before I could call myself a undercard apprentice he sent me a magnificent flower arrangement for my first ever performance during the Teisui-kai event at the Yushima Tenjin. I pray for him🙏

I pray for Tetsuya Chiba-senei's soul to rest in peace.
I will never forget how you warmly spoke to me during a Shogakukan appreciation event many years ago.

https://t.co/HNordGbDKY

When I was a child, the manga I was obsessed with was Ashita no Joe. I remember shadow boxing every day in the hopes of becoming a boxer. I met him several times at an event in Tochigi and he was a modest and kind person. Tetsuya Chiba-sensei, may you rest in peace.

Nariaki Narita (Subaru the Invincible)

I heard the news of Tetsuya Chiba-sensei's passing from a friend and I'm shocked.
As a teacher, Tetsuya Chiba-sensei looked after me while I was a student at the Bunsei University of Art.
I don't know any other mangaka as compassionate as Tetsuya Chiba-sensei.
When I was looking for an advisor when creating the basketball team, he gladly agreed saying, “I'd be happy to help.” And from then on, he would come to watch our games during ball-sports tournaments.
He would play catch every morning with students and taught the importances of mangaka staying physically active.
After seeing the layout of one of my clumsy manga he redrew it by hand saying, “This might be easier to read”.
After I graduated from the Bunsei University of Art, I would sneak into Tetsuya Chiba-sensei's studio, and every time I brought him a manga I'd created, he would gladly read it and give me his thoughts.
Every manga Tetsuya Chiba-sensei said was “interesting” won an award.
When I started serializing on Jump+, he took the time to, at that time, retweet my Twitter post and share his thoughts.
Because I became a mangaka we drifted apart, but I wanted to thank him in person when I became famous.
I'm really grateful.
He loved manga and was always making manga, so he's probably making manga in heaven.
May he rest in peace.

“I love Joe and Rikiishi”
The Joe telephone card he pulled out and signed at a part where we first met, where I endlessly made otaku talk with him, is my treasure.
Thank you for all the wonderful works.
May you rest in peace.

Asako Seo (Nani Rokujū Dosen no Yakusoku)

My debut as a mangaka was the Tetsuya Chiba Award. During the award ceremonies reception I asked “Will you draw Joe (Yabuki)!” and he said, “I can't draw Joe anymore, so is Danpei OK?” I said], “I love Danpei too!” and he drew [him] for me. Then suddenly Chiba-sensei began blacking out the center of the paper and to my surprise he started drawing the eye-patch. Without Chiba-sensei many of us wouldn't be where we are today. My condolences.

Ami Shibata (Papuwa)

The Ashita no Joe manga and anime left a lasting impression on me.
When I'm struggling with a battle scene in a shonen manga, several scenes from Ashita no Joe naturally come to mind.
I learned the importance of depicting both the victor and loser.
Thank you so much, Tetsuya Chiba-sensei. Ami Shibata

I'm at a loss of words at the news of Tetsuya Chiba's passing. May he rest in peace. May he get along with the Star of Manga, Yaguchi.
He came to the unveiling of the Tsurikichi Sampei relief at the Akita Airport with Machiko Satonaka-sensei in October 2016. This is a video of him autographing a replica manuscript at the request of my husband. Oh, I truly have no words. (Yabiki's second daughter, Kaoru)

Tetsuya Chiba-sensei,
You weren't just a mangaka I admired, but also a wonderful person who cared for the next generation of mangaka and always watched over the manga industry.
He helped with the preservation of The Former Residence of Theodora Ozaki, which feels like just yesterday, and must have been a great strain on his body, but it always felt as if he was acting with a mission.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
May he rest in peace.
