Impeachment court grants Baste Duterte request to appear on Sept. 29, 30

MANILA, Philippines – The Senate impeachment court on Monday granted Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte’s request to appear before it on Tuesday and Wednesday.

His request was contained in a letter to the impeachment court on Monday,  according to Presiding Officer and Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero.

Escudero said the mayor requested that “he be given time as he requires substantial time to gather, organize, authenticate, and reproduce the subpoenaed documents and asks that he be allowed to attend instead of today, tomorrow, and on Wednesday, for him to be allowed to attend on September 29 and 30.”

“The presiding officer grants the request of Mayor Duterte to appear tomorrow and Wednesday, which again is covered by the subpoena issued already. So there is no need to issue another subpoena,” Escudero said.

Mayor Duterte was subpoenaed by the impeachment court in relation to allegations that the vice president had amassed  unexplained wealth, which she did not declare in her statement of assets, liabilities and net worth.

His name was also mentioned during last week’s proceedings, when it was revealed that 15 contracts were awarded by the Davao City government to a company linked to the vice president.

The 15 contracts were among the 49 food service deals awarded by government offices in the Davao Region, prosecution witness and Philippine Government Electronic Procurement System -Electronic Government Procurement Operations Division chief Rendell Sopeña earlier told the impeachment court. /jpv
