The 2026-27 season of the Indian Super League (ISL) took just 22 minutes to find its first goalscorer when Borja Martinez broke the deadlock for Bengaluru FC against Sporting Club Delhi here on Saturday.

Martinez joined Bengaluru FC this summer and has taken up the spot left vacant by Braian Sanchez in the midfield as the club looks to win its first title since the 2018-19 season. The 32-year-old got a pass from Ryan Williams before beating Nora Fernandes in goal and giving the Blues the early lead.

The lead, however, was short-lived for SC Delhi’s new signing, Rodriguinho, equalised four minutes later while Menno Koch’s own goal allowed the visiting side take the lead.

The first match of the new ISL season is began at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru with the fan club of the home team turning up in numbers for the fixture.

Sporting Club Delhi, which shifted base from Hyderabad to the national capital from Hyderabad last year, is competing in its second season in the league under the new owners. Bengaluru FC, on the other hand, is eyeing its first title since the 2018-19 season.
