Amazon Prime Video does not get enough credit for reviving a space opera masterpiece that was initially canceled after just three seasons. Cancelations have become increasingly common in the streaming era. Every once in a while, a promising show leaves viewers and critics impressed but struggles to complete the natural course of its story due to diminishing commercial returns.
One of the greatest sci-fi shows of the century, The Expanse, also met with a similar fate. After lasting for three seasons on Syfy and earning wide acclaim, the show was abruptly axed. Like many sci-fi shows, The Expanse would have turned into another forgotten gem that failed to reach its full narrative potential. Fortunately, fate had something else in store for the space opera.
There are a total of nine books in Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck's Expanse book series. In its first three seasons, The Expanse had not even covered half the scope of its source material's overarching story. The show, however, became one of the few rare canceled shows that not only found a new home but also continued long enough to get a semblance of closure.
Syfy Canceled The Expanse After 3 Seasons Before Amazon Revived It
After three strong seasons, The Expanse managed to build a solid following. It was even being touted as "Game of Thrones in space" by many. Owing to this, when the news of its cancelation finally broke out, fans led multiple impactful campaigns that paved the way for its return.
From crowdfunding a plane that flew over Amazon Studios' headquarters with a banner that said "#SAVE THE EXPANSE" to even a 3D-printed model of the Rocinante to the edge of space, the show's fans did it all. Even influential figures, like European Space Agency astronaut Andreas Mogensen, Patton Oswalt, and George R.R. Martin, came forward to support the movement.
Realizing the true potential of the series, Amazon Prime Video eventually decided to give the series a second life. Jeff Bezos himself officially championed the series' return on Prime Video by saying (via Forbes):
"I just got word that The Expanse is saved. The show is extraordinary, and these guys are unbelievably talented.”
For obvious reasons, fans deserve all the credit in the world for not giving up on The Expanse and demanding its return. At the same time, though, Amazon, too, deserves to be praised for recognizing the sci-fi show's true scope and potential even after it was axed. If The Expanse had not returned after three seasons, it probably would not have had the same legacy that it does today.
The Expanse Only Earned Its Masterpiece Status After 6 Seasons
Some of the greatest story arcs and episodes in The Expanse, including "Home" from season 2 and "Delta-V" from season 3, belonged to its opening chapters. Owing to this, it is hard not to deny that the show was already establishing itself as a brilliant sci-fi adaption from the very beginning. However, Syfy canceled the show when it was almost starting to expand its vision beyond the solar system.
If Amazon had not revived the series, the Ring Gates would not have been used as an effective plot device and the show would not have been able to cover the Ilus conflict, the Free Navy crisis, and even Marco Inaros' devastation of Earth.
Some might argue that Prime Video, too, eventually pulled the plug on the series before it could further expand its scope by covering the final three books. The Expanse season 6's six-episode run, too, felt a little too rushed and condensed. However, the show still ended up with a far better fate than what was initially expected.
Hopefully, someday, The Expanse will get another revival on Amazon Prime Video and finally reach its natural conclusion.
