It's time for a George Lucas hero to return to Star Wars. Between the original trilogy, prequel trilogy, and The Clone Wars movie and television series, Lucas created many of Star Wars' best heroes, including Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, R2-D2, Lando Calrissian, Padmé Amidala, Ahsoka Tano, Captain Rex, and Anakin Skywalker before turning to the dark side and in his final moments.
The stories of all these characters have continued in the Star Wars canon that has been created since Lucasfilm was sold to Disney, with the sequel trilogy films, Star Wars Rebels, The Clone Wars season 7, The Bad Batch, and the Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka live-action series being some of the on-screen projects where these hero journeys have been expanded on. In publishing, the novels Bloodline by Claudia Gray, Ahsoka by E.K. Johnston, Brotherhood by Mike Chen, Shadow of the Sith by Adam Christopher, and the Queen's Series by Johnston have also built on the heroes' arcs.
While Disney has continued to explore many of Lucas' heroes, along with villains like Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader, this is not the case for all the characters brought to life in the movies and television series that he oversaw. This includes Colonel Meebur Gascon, an underrated character from The Clone Wars television show, which Lucas created and executive produced, and who is central to his all-time favorite episode.
Star Wars Needs To Bring Back Meebur Gascon
Gascon is a Zilkin military strategist and analyst who serves the Republic during the Clone Wars. He debuts in season 5, episode 10, "Secret Weapons" and remains a central character throughout the four-episode D-Squad arc that aired in 2012, as he leads a team of Republic droids to recover a Separatist encryption code.
For much of the arc, he is not a hero, as he looks down and berates the droids and is focused on how the mission can lead to a promotion within the Republic ranks. However, he gradually comes to see the droids as equals and treats them as such, refusing to leave any of them behind, putting himself in harm's way to help them, and risking his own life to protect the Jedi, Republic officers, and clone soldiers from an explosive Separatist attack. He also helps a clone named Gregor be freed and remember who he truly is.
R2-D2 and WAC-47 are the only members of the original D-Squad to return in the 2023 comic miniseries Star Wars: Dark Droids: D-Squad and Gascon has not appeared in any of the franchise's stories since the aforementioned arc in The Clone Wars. Given his compelling development, unique relationship with the droids, and long absence, it is time for him to return to Star Wars and to explore what happens to him after the Clone Wars end.
It would be particularly fascinating to see where he ends up after the formation of the Galactic Empire. Many individuals within the Republic transitioned over to the Empire, and the same could be true for Gascon, but his existing character development arguably makes him better-suited to defect and join the Rebel Alliance.
The Rebellion would also be a better fit for Gascon due to the Empire's xenophobia toward aliens, his resourcefulness as a military strategist and analyst, and it would give him a natural means to reunite with R2-D2 and WAC-47, the latter of whom also joined the Rebel Alliance, and Gregor as well depending on when the story is set.
Meebur Gascon’s Return Can Honor George Lucas’ Legacy
Beyond originating in one of the Star Wars creator's projects, Gascon is a key character in George Lucas' favorite Clone Wars episode, season 5, episode 11, "A Sunny Day in the Void." On IMDb, it is tied for the lowest-rated episode in the series with a rating of 6.0/10, a perfect example of how Lucas does not gravitate toward what is popular but to what resonates with him, including a more eccentric and unconventional episode of Gascon and the droids facing existential questions as they wander through a seemingly empty and endless landscape.
Gascon is also representative of what Lucas does best, which is bringing a weird, kid-friendly character to life that is entertaining while teaching important themes. This is exactly what the character does as a tiny frog-like creature who teaches the importance of not looking down on others who are different, not just looking out for yourself, and instead learning to see others as equals, along with the value of teamwork and what it means to be a hero.
Bringing Gascon back to Star Wars and continuing his story is a way to further honor Lucas' legacy. Given that he debuted in animation and has such a distinctive visual design, it would probably be the best medium for him to reappear in.
