Ezra Bridger has finally returned to Star Wars, and he's ushering in a new era for the franchise as a whole via Ahsoka season 2. Though he was missing in action for five real-world years after the ending of Star Wars Rebels, Ezra Bridger finally made his on-screen return in Ahsoka season 1. He had a few important things to do in the first season, and he ended up being quite important to the ending of Ahsoka season 1, but Ezra is poised to become even more important in Ahsoka season 2.
At the end of Ahsoka season 1, Ezra stowed away aboard Grand Admiral Thrawn's ship and finally made it back to the main Star Wars galaxy. There, he reunited with Hera Syndulla and, presumably, began preparing the New Republic to fight back against Thrawn and the Imperial Remnants. Ahsoka season 2 is set to pick up essentially right where it left off with Ezra, which should mean that it will be entering a new era.
Ezra Bridger's Return Finally Gives The Mandoverse A Central Storyline
The main reason Ezra's return is such a momentous occasion for Star Wars is because he has finally given the Mandoverse a central storyline. Since The Mandalorian premiered in 2019, we've referred to it, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka as the Mandoverse, a mini-franchise of shows set a few years after the ending of Return of the Jedi. All three shows were connected via crossovers in The Mandalorian, and they all took place at roughly the same moment in the Star Wars timeline, but that was all that linked them to one another. The Mandoverse didn't really have a central story to speak of.
The Mandalorian was mostly a standalone story about Din Djarin and Grogu's attempts to evade the Imperial Remnants while also restoring Mandalore. The Book of Boba Fett was about Boba Fett reclaiming Tatooine as his own in the wake of Jabba's death. Ahsoka season 1 was primarily about Ahsoka and Sabine hunting down Morgan Elsbeth and searching for Thrawn. The Mandoverse was just three standalone stories that sometimes intersected.
Now, however, the Mandoverse actually has a clear story thanks to Ezra and Thrawn. The Mandoverse is now about the Empire's attempt to retake power from the New Republic. The Imperial Remnant in The Mandalorian was awaiting Thrawn's return, The Book of Boba Fett was showing the power vaccuum left in the Empire's wake, and Ahsoka season 1 showed how woefully unprepared the New Republic is to defend itself. These aren't three loosely connected shows anymore, they're chapters in the saga of the Empire's final fight before morphing into the First Order.
Ahsoka Season 2 May Be Ending The Mandoverse's Story Just As It Takes Shape
While Ezra and Thrawn are giving the Mandoverse its first cohesive story, Ahsoka season 2 may be the end of that story just as it's starting. Ahsoka season 1 set the stage for Thrawn's final battle against the New Republic, but season 2 has already put the pieces in place to show the climax of that battle. The trailer for Ahsoka season 2 has Thrawn's ships openly engaging New Republic forces, and it very much so seems like Thrawn will be defeated by the end of the season.

The state of the Mandoverse also supports the idea that Thrawn will be defeated in Ahsoka season 2. After years of being the dominant force in Star Wars, the Mandoverse is faltering. The Mandalorian and Grogu bombed, The Mandalorian season 4 is nowhere to be found, Dave Filoni's Mandoverse film is in production limbo, and upcoming movies like Starfighter are leaving the New Republic era behind. Ahsoka season 2 is all the Mandoverse has left, and it may be the last chance Filoni has to finish the story of Thrawn and the Imperial Remnants.
If Ahsoka season 2 does mark the end of Thrawn's story, it would be a major shame. After seven years of the Mandoverse, the mini-franchise finally has a story worthy of having three different shows and six seasons of television, and it ends just as it starts. Thrawn, Ezra, and the wider story of the Mandoverse deserve a grander finale than Ahsoka season 2, but they may not get it.
