Diane Morgan's returning BBC comedy series gets first look at brand-new season

Fresh off the success of Ann Droid, Diane Morgan is returning to her most iconic role for the first time in two years. As she prepares to play Philomena Cunk once again, we have our first look at Cunk on Cinema.

The comedy series sees the interviewer and cultural commentator offer her views on the history of cinema, with industry figures such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Kermode being questioned in the process.

"The three-part series will uncover the invention of the camera, to the New Wave filmmakers of the '60s, right up to the entrance of CGI and what the future of AI holds," reads the logline.

"Cunk will attempt to demystify it all while sitting in lumpy seats with stale popcorn, asking herself where did cinema come from? And why? What does it want? And why can’t it tell us?"

Though we still don't have a release date for the mockumentary series, we do have a first-look image as Morgan's Cunk is pictured looking down the lens of an expensive-looking camera.

In addition to Cumberbatch and Kermode, other figures to appear in the series include filmmakers Michael Bay and Mark Cousins, screenwriter Steven E de Souza, composer Daniel Pemberton and cinematographer Seamus McGarvey.

Kermode isn't the only film critic to appear either, with Isabel Stevens, Helen O'Hara and Catherine Bray all taking part. Bryony Dixon, the curator of silent film at the British Film Institute (BFI), will also be offering their expertise.

It is billed as Cunk's "most glamorous series to date", with the "pioneering documentary-maker" set to explore the world's "love affair" with cinema. Of course, there'll be plenty of awkwardness along the way.

Cunk on Cinema has been co-written by Morgan and Charlie Brooker among a host of other contributors, with the series set to come to BBC Two and BBC iPlayer in the UK. In international territories, it will stream on Netflix.

Morgan first portrayed the iconic character in Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe, before several spin-offs and specials aired on the BBC. In 2018, we got a five-part series called Cunk on Britain, while Cunk on Earth came four years later.

Cunk on Cinema has no release date.
