Police arrest electric unicycle rider filmed speeding down Doi Suthep

CHIANG MAI — Police have arrested a man filmed riding an electric unicycle at high speed down Doi Suthep, following public complaints that the stunt could cause a serious accident.

Pol. Col. Sinothai Lilittham, superintendent of Phuping Rajanives Police Station, said on 19 October 2026 that officers and investigators had tracked down the rider shown in the widely shared video.

The man, identified only as “Chai” (an assumed name), lives in Nong Chom subdistrict, San Sai district, Chiang Mai. Police seized his electric unicycle and handed him over to investigators for legal proceedings.

The case followed the circulation of footage showing a group of electric unicycle riders speeding down a road on Doi Suthep to create online content. The video prompted criticism over the danger posed to other road users, particularly on steep slopes and sharp bends.

Police said electric unicycles and electric scooters cannot legally be ridden on public roads under traffic laws, warning that such use could lead to serious accidents.

Members of the public who witness dangerous riding or disruptive stunts can report them to the police hotline at 191 or Phuping Rajanives Police Station at 053-211750, around the clock.
