Upcoming Paramount+ Shows Reportedly Eying Move To HBO Max

The future of Paramount+ shows is getting clearer.

With Paramount's acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, one of the biggest questions was what would happen to the Paramount+ and HBO Max streaming services. The post-merger company, which is now known as Skydance, appointed HBO's Casey Bloys as the Co-Chair and Chief Content Officer of Skydance Direct-to-Consumer, in which he is responsible for overseeing both Paramount+ and HBO Max, and co-CEO David Ellison has discussed plan to eventually merge the two services.

A new report from Deadline now shares that while no official decisions have been made yet, the possibility is being discussed of moving Paramount+'s upcoming drama series to HBO Max. Potential candidates include Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning's legal thriller Discretion, the 9/11 first responders show The Best of Us led by Succession's Jeremy Strong, and other projects that are in the midst of waiting for an official greenlight.

Conversations about this move have reportedly reached the highest levels of Skydance, but all Paramount+ shows are staying on the platform for now as talks continue to progress. Meanwhile, Francesca Orsi, who was promoted from EVP to President of HBO Drama Series and Films, is working with Bloys to decide which drama projects belong on HBO.

As part of reviewing the Paramount+ slate with Sarah Aubrey, Head of Paramount+, Max Originals and International Programming, Orsi allegedly may also be tasked with looking at which Paramount+ series feel aligned with HBO, along with working on the select shows that stay on Paramount+, especially if they are akin to HBO's prestige dramas.

While the new streaming structure is still being worked out, moving upcoming Paramount+ shows like Discretion and The Best of Us to HBO Max could potentially expedite plans to merge the platforms together. From Kidman's time on Big Little Lies and The Undoing and Strong playing Kendall Roy in Succession, the stars of these series have plenty of Emmy Award-winning experience with HBO, making their new prestige dramas a natural fit.

This may be the trajectory for Paramount+'s upcoming shows, but it does not answer what will happen to the ones that already exist. From Landman to The Madison, there is no shortage of ongoing Taylor Sheridan shows on Paramount+, but it is unclear whether they will also move to HBO Max, especially before his NBCUniversal television deal begins in 2029. There's also the matter of where unscripted shows will go, including the many reality ones that also air on CBS, such as Big Brother, Survivor, and The Amazing Race.

If all Paramount+ content eventually shifts to HBO Max, there is additionally the matter of whether Skydance's streaming service will just be called HBO Max, if it will combine names, or if there will be a complete rebranding. Before the merger, HBO's streaming platform already underwent many name changes, including HBO Go, HBO Now, HBO Max, Max, and eventually back to HBO Max. Another major and more pressing question is what the subscription prices will look like if the two services and all their movies and shows are fully merged.
