Teenager dies in head-on collision south-west of Sydney

A teenager died in a head-on crash in Sydney’s far south-west early on Saturday morning that shut down a main road for several hours.

Two cars collided on Wilton’s Picton Road, a major arterial road connecting Wollongong and Sydney, before 6.30am, NSW Police said in a statement.

The crash left both drivers trapped. One, who authorities identified as a man in his late teens, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene. The other, a 26-year-old man, was treated for head and leg injuries and taken to Liverpool Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Picton Road was closed in both directions for most of Saturday morning, with Transport for NSW encouraging drivers to travel between Sydney and Wollongong via the Hume Motorway or Appin Road. It reopened by midday.

Police are still investigating the crash, and said a report would be prepared for the state’s coroner. They are calling for anyone with dashcam footage or other information to contact Camden Police Area Command or Crime Stoppers.

There have been at least four fatal crashes on the Picton Road strip since 2022. That year, a 54-year-old man died in a collision between a car and a truck.

Nearby in Buxton, five teenagers were killed in September 2022 when Tyrell Edwards, then 20, lost control of his mother’s Nissan Nivarra and crashed into a tree, driving about 117.9km/h in a 60km/h zone. He was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment.
