Woman killed by Tema-Afienya train as residents demand footbridge

Translate

An unidentified woman has been killed after being struck by a passenger train on the Tema-Afienya railway line at Mataheko-Sebrepo, prompting residents to renew calls for a footbridge to provide a safer crossing between communities in the area.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night, leaving residents at the scene grappling with the aftermath as they waited for the police to arrive.

Witnesses said they heard the train sound its horn shortly before the collision, followed by an unusual noise that alerted people to the incident.

The impact reportedly left the woman’s body severely mutilated, with her head thrown into a nearby gutter. Some residents and bystanders searched the area to locate it.

Residents raise concerns over safety

Residents said the incident had revived longstanding concerns about the difficulty of crossing the railway line and the need for a dedicated pedestrian crossing to connect communities in the enclave.

They are calling on the relevant authorities to construct a footbridge to reduce the risk of pedestrians being struck by trains.

The residents believe such a facility would provide a safer route across the railway and help prevent similar tragedies.

According to accounts from people at the scene, several emergency calls were made after the incident, but assistance had not arrived by the time some residents began taking steps to preserve the body.

When a news crew arrived at about 9:30 p.m., residents said they had made repeated calls for help.

The body was subsequently conveyed by officers of the Afienya-Mataheko Police for the necessary procedures.

The identity of the deceased had not been established at the time of reporting, and further details about the circumstances of the incident were not immediately available.
