Disney doesn’t have the best track record with live-action adaptations of its classic animated movies; however, one exception might be Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (2010). While opinions on the movie remain divided 16 years later, plenty of fans love this darker, fantastical reimagining of Lewis Carroll’s original work. Now, there’s exciting news: a Burton-inspired take on Alice in Wonderland is slated to return in 2027. This return is particularly notable for its international reach, extending this iconic reimagining beyond English-speaking audiences.
Die-hard fans of Alice in Wonderland, especially Tim Burton’s version, may recall that TOKYOPOP released Disney Manga: Alice in Wonderland in 2016 under its Disney Manga line. Written and illustrated by Jun Abe, this 352-page hardcover collector’s edition retold Burton’s darker fantasy reimagining of Alice in Wonderland through a manga lens, offering a unique take that stands apart from Lewis Carroll’s original novel and Disney’s 1951 animated movie.
The official synopsis for the manga reads: “Based on Tim Burton’s fantastical movie, Disney’s Alice in Wonderland manga tells the story of Alice Kingsleigh, a young girl who visited the magical world of Underland for the first time. After she spots a white rabbit at a garden party, she tumbles down a hole after him and is reunited with her old friends. She soon learns it is her destiny to end the Red Queen’s reign of terror. You’ve never seen the Lewis Carroll classic quite like this!”
Now, 10 years after this fantastical, artistically stunning Alice in Wonderland reimagining was released, TOKYOPOP has announced an exciting release on the horizon for Spanish-speaking fans.

Slated for a January 26, 2027, release, TOKYOPOP will be delivering a Spanish-language version of the manga based on Tim Burton’s Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. This release is particularly notable for several reasons. Firstly, the fact that this title is getting a Spanish-language version speaks to how exceptional it is, even 10 years after its English publication. So, if you don’t speak Spanish but missed the English release of the manga, then this is your sign to go back and read this masterpiece.
Second, a quick Google search shows that around 636 million people worldwide speak Spanish. While this number doesn’t account for literacy rates, we can assume most of these speakers can also read. By releasing a Spanish version of Disney Manga: Alice in Wonderland, TOKYOPOP makes this masterpiece accessible to millions of additional readers.
While many Spanish speakers are also fluent in English and may have already enjoyed the title, many bilingual and multilingual fans can attest that experiencing media in your native language, especially printed media like manga, can make it far more enjoyable. Hence, it is commendable that TOKYOPOP is expanding this title's reach to Spanish-speaking readers.

While TOKYOPOP released the English-language version of the Alice in Wonderland manga, readers should note that the Japanese-language edition came first. Jun Abe’s manga adaptation began serialization in the Japanese magazine Tokyo 1 Week, and Kodansha published the first collected Japanese volume in 2010. Hence, TOKYOPOP’s English-language version arrived six years later, in 2016.
In addition to the original Japanese version and TOKYOPOP’s English and upcoming Spanish-language editions, the manga has also been published in French, Italian, and Portuguese. The French version was published by Pika Édition in 2013, while the Portuguese version was published by Abril in Brazil in 2015. Meanwhile, Panini Comics first published the Italian edition of Disney Alice in Wonderland in 2021.
Hence, this upcoming Spanish edition is the latest step in expanding the manga’s international reach and bringing Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland to fans worldwide through a unique medium.
