Prabowo's B50 drive helps strengthen energy security: expert

President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming have proven capable of safeguarding Indonesia's energy security amid external pressures during their first two years in office through the B50 policy, an academic said.

Ali Ahmudi Achyak, an energy expert from the University of Indonesia, said the policy, which requires diesel fuel to contain 50 percent palm oil-based biodiesel, helps ensure adequate energy supplies for the country.

"The government developed B40 and then B50 in pursuit of [energy] availability," he remarked when contacted by ANTARA from Jakarta on Thursday.

He underscored energy supply sufficiency as a key parameter of a country's energy security, noting that the government has sought to strengthen it through both the B50 program and E10, a policy requiring gasoline to contain a 10 percent blend of plant-based ethanol.

The two initiatives, Achyak said, serve as key instruments for Indonesia to mitigate supply disruption risks arising from transit restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy chokepoints.

In this regard, he stressed that the government must take all necessary measures to ensure adequate energy supplies amid global uncertainty.

The academic identified affordability as another key component of energy security, saying that Prabowo and Gibran had demonstrated their commitment to maintaining fuel prices despite rising global energy costs.

"Even though the world is witnessing fluctuating oil prices, the government continues rolling out measures, including a decision not to increase subsidized fuel prices," Achyak said.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry said biodiesel distribution under the B50 mandate had reached 75–80 percent nationwide as of Aug. 31.

Director General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Eniya Listiani Dewi said on that date that the ministry would continue monitoring distribution and evaluating the program to ensure its effective implementation.

The government aims to implement the B50 mandate at all fuel stations by October 2026.
