DC has officially announced that Green Lantern Hal Jordan will star in a new series arriving in 2027, along with a first look at his new redesign. This is arguably Hal's most hardcore redesign to date, and it feels like an epic fusion of Green Lantern and Warhammer 40K that perfectly fits the dark, legacy-changing story teased for the new series.
Warhammer 40K is a massive science-fantasy franchise built around a brutal, dystopian future where humanity fights for survival against aliens, demons, and other powerful enemies. The franchise is widely recognizable for its massive, heavily armored warriors and glowing weapons. These elements, from its brutal dystopian futire to its iconic power armor, are essentially what DC is teasing with its new Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos series.
The first issue of Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos will release on January 20, 2027, with writer Dan Watters (Batman: Dark Patterns), artist Kyle Hotz (Justice League Dark), colorist Dan Brown, and letterer Steve Wands bringing this new six-part Elseworlds series to life. As a quick refresher, the Elseworlds imprint is DC's label for stories outside the publisher's main continuity, giving creators the freedom to tell bold, often darker-leaning stories.
The 32-page debut issue of Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos #1 will be available for $4.99 US, with card stock variants priced at $5.99 US and a foil variant available for $7.99 US.
As part of the announcement for this upcoming series, DC has shared eight preview pages featuring Kyle Hotz's interior art for the first issue, along with an official synopsis and a range of epic cover art showcasing Hal Jordan's Warhammer 40K-esque redesign. All these goodies can be found below.
Hal Jordan’s Hardcore Redesign For New Series Is Green Lantern Meets Warhammer 40K
Main Cover by Kyle Hotz for Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos #1 (2027)
First things first: Hal Jordan's new redesign is nothing short of epic and might be the character's best look yet. Hal's new look is featured across the various covers revealed for the first issue, including Hotz's main cover and variant covers by artists Steve Beach, Ashley Wood, and Björn Barends. Despite their different, equally stunning art styles, the covers all depict Hal Jordan in what looks like power armor straight out of Warhammer 40K.

Unlike Hal's traditionally sleek, skintight Green Lantern suit, this new design features bulky sci-fi armor, complete with enormous rounded shoulder plates, layered dark metal plating, exposed tubing, and mechanical components across his shoulders and back. Paired with a massive weapon powered by glowing Green Lantern energy, these elements give Hal an incredibly imposing silhouette. Despite the dramatic design change, the familiar green color scheme and Green Lantern logo keep the suit instantly recognizable as a Green Lantern uniform.
For Warhammer 40K fans, it's hard not to draw a connection between Hal’s new redesign and the iconic power armor that defines the franchise. Like the power armor worn by Space Marines and other factions in Warhammer 40K, Hal’s suit doesn’t seem unique to his character, but rather the standard garb for all Green Lanterns. This is evident in the eight-page preview of Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos, which can be found below.
Everything You Need To Know About Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos
Interior Pages by Kyle Hotz for Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos #1 (2027)
Based on the cover art and interior pages above, it's clear that readers are in for an epic ride. However, in addition to these art reveals, we also have an idea of what to expect plot-wise, thanks to DC's official press release, which included a synopsis for the issue:
For centuries, the Empire of Humanity has swept across the universe, laying siege to the cosmos planet by planet until all kneel before the might of the human race. Only the heavily militarized Green Lantern Corps dares oppose the human crusade.
And no human has ever fought for the Corps against the Empire. Until Hal Jordan.
Once a soldier fighting on behalf of humanity, Hal was betrayed by his battle-brother Oliver Queen and left for dead on an alien world. Rescued and deprogrammed by the Green Lantern Corps, Hal is now the Corps’ only human warrior and a powerful strategic weapon in its war against humankind. Hal’s blood-soaked odyssey will carry him through the burning ruins of a DC Universe unlike any readers have seen before, as Hal fights for peace by taking the battle to the shores of Hell itself.
Based on this synopsis, DC seems to be gearing up to deliver an epic, grimdark space opera. Not only will Hal Jordan and the other Green Lanterns battle the human race, but at least one of Hal's most iconic friendships will also shatter. With Hal Jordan at the center of this conflict and the fate of the universe in his hands, this promises to be an unmissable chapter for Green Lantern fans.
