5 Reasons Neagley's Spinoff Has Ended Reacher's Rotten Tomatoes Streak

Neagley was always expected to be a worthy addition to Prime Video's Reacher franchise. But it has surprisingly surpassed all expectations by breaking the franchise's Rotten Tomatoes streak. Based on audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes, Reacher season 1 reigns supreme with an impressive score of 91%.
Despite landing in critics' good books, all other seasons of Reacher have struggled to cross the 80% mark with their audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes. While season 2 sits at 77%, seasons 3 and 4 have audience scores of 74% and 65%, respectively. There has been a clear and sharp decline in the show's audience score with each new season.
The new Neagley spin-off show, however, has finally ended this streak. Serving as the fifth installment in the Prime Video detective franchise, Neagley boasts an audience score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. While many factors have contributed to Neagley's success among audiences, there are five reasons why it has managed to break Reacher's diminishing RT score streak.
Neagley Offers Relief From Reacher's Redundant Formula
One of the biggest reasons why Reacher has worked so incredibly well as a show is that it always delivers exactly what viewers expect. Its invincible juggernaut lead rolls into a new town every season and ends up crushing the bad guys before embracing the open road again. While this formula continues to work quite well, it is showing signs of some wear.
Neagley, on the other hand, brings something new to the table. It shakes up the franchise's established rhythm with its more grounded procedural drama where the main character's win is not exactly a foregone conclusion. Since the Neagley spin-off also does not have an existing source material, it feels like a completely novel addition to the overarching franchise.
Maria Sten Delivers A Standout Performance As Neagley
Since Reacher season 1, Maria Sten has been incredible as Frances Neagley. With her performance, she perfectly captures how her character is very similar to Reacher in more ways than one, explaining why they get along so well. At the same time, she also brings some subtle vulnerability to Neagley, which helps her establish herself as a distinct detective lead instead of appearing too derivative.

In terms of tone, the Neagley spin-off seems a little too serious even though the Maria Sten character is expected to have a more colorful personality than Reacher. However, despite this, Sten's performance ensures that Neagley remains a compelling lead throughout the spin-off's runtime.
Neagley Benefited From Its Binge-Release Model
All episodes of Reacher season 1 were released in a single day. However, with season 2, the show adopted a weekly release format. From a commercial standpoint, shows with massive followings benefit a lot from a weekly release format. More often than not, though, their audience reception experiences a decline because viewers start judging an entire series based on a few episodes.
This is one of the biggest reasons why Reacher season 4's audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is so low. Fortunately, for Neagley, Prime Video dropped all of its episodes simultaneously right alongside the Reacher season 4's finale. This allowed it to benefit from the franchise momentum created by the highs from Reacher season 4's ending.
At the same time, this release approach even allowed viewers to watch the spin-off's entire season instead of judging it based on a few early episodes.
Neagley Pays Off A Reacher Story With An Emotional Backstory
Since season 1, Reacher has been packed with flashbacks and backstory scenes that add more depth to the Alan Ritchson character. However, Jack Reacher has largely been portrayed as a stoic character who sees the world through a black-and-white objective lens. While Neagley, too, can be incredibly stoic and badass, she has been a more vulnerable character since the beginning.
Like Lee Child's Jack Reacher books, the Prime Video series also previously addressed Neagley's aversion to touch (Haphephobia) but never delved into its details.
The Neagley spin-off perfectly pays off this story development by walking through a traumatic childhood incident that shaped the Maria Sten character. It even uses this story beat to highlight how safe and respectful Neagley's bond is with Reacher, which establishes both characters as amicable and rootable leads of the franchise.
Alan Ritchson's Reacher Cameo In Neagley Does Not Feel Forced Or Overdone
Given how Jack Reacher has been the only lead of the franchise in the Prime Video show and Lee Child's original books since the beginning, his appearance in the Neagley spin-off risked overshadowing the Maria Sten character. However, given how Neagley directly ties to Reacher, the spin-off had to have an Alan Ritchson cameo in some capacity.
Fortunately, Reacher's Neagley spin-off navigates this really well by giving Alan Ritchson's Reacher a brief but memorable arc in the beginning and towards the end. Instead of merely having him in an insignificant role, the spin-off ensures that he is a meaningful part of Neagley's journey towards healing herself. At the same time, his presence never takes away from Neagley's story, allowing her to shine as the spin-off's lead.
