Los Angeles Rams Shake Off Historic Slow Start To Defeat Winless Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Rams spent most of a half doing nothing at all. Five drives, zero first downs, a first in Sean McVay's career. Then Kyren Williams scored with 19 seconds left before the break, and the afternoon tilted. The Rams beat the winless Los Angeles Chargers 24-9 at SoFi Stadium on Sunday, moving to 4-4 and winning back-to-back games for the first time since January. Jim Harbaugh's Chargers fell to 0-7, their worst start since 2000, and they have gone nine quarters without a touchdown.

Blake Corum Gives The Los Angeles Rams An Offense Worth Watching

The Rams gained 24 yards on their first 15 plays. That is not a slow start. That is a stall. A 40-yard catch by Tutu Atwell finally cracked it open, and Williams punched in the first score without a defender touching him.

After halftime, Corum took over. He ran 11 times for 73 yards, a 6.6 average, and capped a 55-yard drive with a 23-yard touchdown. Williams carried 16 times for 56 yards. Matthew Stafford went 17 of 25 for 157 yards and was sacked once, which tells you how little the Rams asked of him.

Trent McDuffie's interception led to the next score. Two plays later, Puka Nacua caught a screen and turned it into 18 yards and a touchdown. He finished with 11 catches on 12 targets for 80 yards, and he sounded unimpressed with his own team.

“This is something that we've got to build upon, but it's not something we can exhale from,” Nacua said.

Justin Herbert And The Los Angeles Chargers Keep Giving The Ball Away

Quentin Lake picked off Justin Herbert early and returned it 45 yards, setting up the Rams' first field goal. Herbert threw another interception later. He has now thrown at least one in all seven games this season, even while piling up 257 passing yards.

The Chargers did move the ball. They gained 295 yards, and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel called two successful flea-flickers in a row. Yet every drive seemed to end in a field goal attempt or a mistake. Herbert gave the cleanest explanation.

“I think the turnovers are what's stopping us, and that's something we have to clean up,” Herbert said. “When we're not converting on third down and not scoring points in the red zone, it's tough in that regard.”

The Rams did all this without Davante Adams. Their next trip is to Washington, while the Chargers host the Houston Texans.

One moment summed up the day better than any statistic. Aaron Donald, 35 years old, chased Herbert's loose fumble with nothing but grass ahead of him. The ball bounced out of bounds before he could grab it. Donald lay flat on the turf, and his teammates pretended to treat him like an injured player.

“Oh man, I'm going to give him such a hard time about that,” coach Sean McVay said.
