Bafana Bafana latest: Maboe withdrawn, Moremi returns!

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed the withdrawal of Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe from the Bafana Bafana camp.

Maboe reported for camp on Monday despite suffering an ankle injury in a league match against Golden Arrows on Sunday.

And while Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane had intended to retain him as reported by The South African, the medical team ruled out him for this camp.

Mosimane had hoped to keep Maboe in the camp for the next three weeks with the hope that he would recover and get some minutes.

However, that is no longer the case, and in his place, the association has sent an invitation letter to Orlando Pirates for Tshepang Moremi to join Bafana Bafana.

Moremi was excluded from Mosimane’s final squad despite his ever-presence in the latter stages of Hugo Broos’ tenure.

The left-footed attacker also did well enough to earn a place in the Bafana Bafana squad that represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

“He twisted his ankle while playing for Kaizer Chiefs and after undergoing a scan, he will be ruled out from the current camp and this FIFA window,” Dr Tshepo Molobi told the association’s website.

BAFANA BAFANA’S NEXT THREE GAMES

Bafana Bafana will be at home against Guinea in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on Saturday, 26 September.

Kick-off at Orlando Amstel Arena is at 15:00.

They will then fly to Egypt to face Eritrea on 30 September before playing an international friendly with the Pharaohs on 4 October.
