Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson shared a court at Chase Center on Thursday night, only this time they wore different colors. The Golden State Warriors beat Thompson's Miami Heat 120-100, and Curry finished with 29 points in the team's sixth straight win. Postgame, someone asked the Warriors superstar about trash talk between the old teammates. His answer had nothing to do with basketball. It was about a college game and a bet he happened to win. Thompson, back in San Francisco for the first time as a Heat player, had kind words for Curry afterward.
Stephen Curry And Klay Thompson Trade Jokes Over A College Bet
Stephen Curry was asked if Klay Thompson's earlier comments about enjoying wins over old friends gave Golden State extra fuel. The answer was no.
“No, the only conversations we've had are the Davidson Wildcats beating the Washington State Cougars and me getting the best end of that bet,” Curry said with a laugh. He then added, “So that was cool.”
Curry went to Davidson. Thompson played at Washington State. The Wildcats won, and Curry has the bragging rights.
Curry said the friendship sits apart from the games. Thirteen seasons together and four championships in Golden State will do that. Once the ball goes up, the competitive streak takes care of itself.
Thompson, who left the Warriors in free agency a few years ago, spoke about Curry too. “What Steph is doing…as his teammate, I got to see it every night and it became normal but to see it as an opponent, it's incredible…it's all the respect in the world for him.”
Thompson went on. “He deserves all the accolades and money. He's 1 of 1 and the game is going to miss him when he hangs it up.”
Curry's Second Half Lifts Golden State To Sixth Straight Win
Curry had a strong second half against Miami and finished with 29 points. Golden State sits at 6-3.
Few expected much after last season. The West is deep, and the Warriors changed little over the summer. Curry is surrounded by mostly role players, Jimmy Butler is still out, and Kristaps Porzingis was lost before the season began. Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg is the only notable addition.
Steve Kerr has leaned on that group, and Curry has answered with 25 to 30 points a night. Curry also guarded Thompson in the first quarter. Thompson took the loss, but it was all love afterward. The Splash Brothers have stayed close since he left.
