KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for a swift investigation into the death of a 16-year-old student who was found dead at a school in Yong Peng, Johor.

Anwar said he has instructed the authorities to conduct an immediate, thorough and transparent investigation to identify the cause and determine what actually happened.

"If there are criminal elements, firm action must be taken in accordance with the law," he said in a Facebook post.

Reaffirming the government's stance on child safety, Anwar emphasised that protecting students remains a collective duty.

"The safety of our children is a shared responsibility. The government will not compromise in ensuring their safety and well-being are always protected," he said.

He also expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, extending his deepest sympathies to the victim's family.

"I am deeply saddened to receive the news and my condolences to the family and relatives. May they be given strength and fortitude in facing this extremely heavy trial," he added.

Yesterday, a Form Four student Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal was found dead with injuries at a secondary school in Yong Peng, in what is suspected to be a murder.

The victim was found by her grandmother, who went to the school after becoming concerned when her granddaughter had not returned home by 5.30pm.
