Aaron Boone will return for 10th season as Yankees manager despite fan outrage: reports

Translate

After yet another season of another team celebrating on their own field, reports say Aaron Boone will return for his 10th season as the team's manager.

Boone's contract expires after the 2027 season, and assuming the owners lock out the players on Dec. 1, managers are not allowed to communicate with players. So, perhaps management is not willing to take the risk of losing a manager who has finished over .500 in each season and made the postseason in eight of his nine campaigns.

However, the fan base has grown incensed, as Boone is the only manager in team history to hold his post for at least five seasons and not win a title.

The Yankees' 2026 season was almost a carbon copy of last season, going 93-68 and getting swept in the American League Division Series by the eventual pennant-winning Tampa Bay Rays, their own division rival. In 2025, they went 94-68 and lost to their division rival, the Toronto Blue Jays, in the ALDS, who were inches away from winning the World Series.

Reports circulated that owner Hal Steinbrenner had been aware of the fans' disdain for their manager - chants of "Fire Boone" rang through Yankee Stadium as the Yankees' season ended.

Boone was hired after the Yankees opted not to bring back Joe Girardi following the 2017 season. He was given a four-year deal and then extended another four years. After the 2024 season, in which they lost the World Series, Boone was given a second extension, which is his current deal.

A common criticism of Boone is that he is not harsh enough on his players, which leads to lazy play and mental mistakes during a "June Swoon," which the Yankees seem to take forever to crawl out of. Under Boone, the Yankees have won the division three times and the pennant once, yet they've beaten only one team in a postseason series that had a better record than they did (2020 Wild Card Series vs. Cleveland).

The Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros are the only teams that are looking for managers after letting go of Dan Wilson and Joe Espada, respectively. The New York Mets (Andy Green), Boston Red Sox (Chad Tracy) and Philadelphia Phillies (Don Mattingly) have all retained their interim managers on a full-time basis.
