The Midterms Gave Us a Blue Wave — And Some Hilarious Music Memes
Few corners of the internet are having more fun than music fans on X
The tides are turning, thanks to the blue wave brought on by the midterm elections. The Democratic Party emerged victorious in several states for the first time in decades, helping it to take control of the entirety of Congress, ans number of first-time positions were secured by minority demographics in historic moves. To add to it app, X is back to Twitter-levels of funny. Celebratory jokes have flooded timelines since the earliest results were called, and few corners of the internet are having more fun than Music Twitter.
A lot of music fans joked about what the soundtrack to the blue surge should be, throwing out everything from making Selena and Bobby Pulido (who won his congressional race in Texas) the official state anthem to replacing the “Star-Spangled Banner.”

On Instagram, Halsey played into the surge of jokes using lyrics from her song “Colors,” writing, “EVERYTHING IS MF BLUE BABY.” One viral post featuring a video of the 2015 song tagged nearly two dozen profiles, including Nicki Minaj, JD Vance, and direct accounts for the Republican party and ICE.
The singer-songwriter did get serious for a second, too. “So many firsts, so much hope, but also so much work to do,” they said. “This moment of unity feels amazing and I sincerely hope we can make it last through the very long road ahead. I’m so grateful to every single voter who made their voice heard and made this possible.”

The results were even sweeter for Tinashe fans, who backed the singer as she encouraged republican fans to exit her fandom. “VOTE OR DIE ! LETS GO AMERICA,” she wrote, using 12 blue heart emojis. When someone responded accusing her of alienating her red-voting audience, Tinashe hit back with a swift “Yall can go.” In celebration of the victory, several people joked that the electric Popstar single “Melatonin” will be rightfully replacing “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Before we had Democrats filling seats in a historic fashion and Benson Boone flipping off of pianos, we had Fergie barreling through one-handed cartwheels on the Today Show at 9 o’clock in the morning in 2008. The singer was on the show to perform “Barracuda,” which doesn’t have the same optimism of something like the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling,” but the everlasting meme still meets the moment.
All of this post-election optimism even has some voters coming around to Lizzo. “Lizzo music sounding good asfff tonight,” one user wrote on X. The compliment couldn’t be more backhanded, but she’ll take it anyway. Lizzo responded in the quotes with a gif of comedian Druski playing a character who just got out of jail.

One artist no one has plans to uplift, however, is Morgan Wallen. The country star, whose legacy includes a video of him screaming racial slurs while drunk and flipping over pianos, has seen his bad behavior result in backlash towards his collaborators — now, it’s extended to his biggest fans. “If Morgan Wallen is in your Spotify Wrapped this year you’re getting sent to Guantanamo Bay,” one X user joked.
They just downloaded the Hamilton soundtrack to everyone’s iPhones

More than a decade after millions of iTunes users were force-fed a download of U2’s Songs of Innocence, music fans are considering running the marketing tactic back. This time, everyone would have no choice but the listen to the Hamilton soundtrack. And if the”Melatonin” national anthem plan doesn’t work out, one user suggested we have Lin-Manuel Miranda write a whole new one.
