Hollyoaks exclusive! Every secret from Ste's return in shock Chester scenes

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks characters were let loose on the streets of Chester on Thursday – with Digital Spy and Inside Soap nearby to capture all of the biggest moments!

We were invited along to spend the day with cast and crew, and can now share our full report from a soap press trip we'll never forget…

The day began on the River Dee, close to the bridge which features in the Hollyoaks opening titles.

We set sail on a boat called Lady Diana, with cast inside ready to share clues and gossip about the show's biggest ongoing storyline – what on earth has happened to Ste Hay since he went missing last month?

The boat was filled with Hollyoaks memorabilia – and more importantly, popular stars from the show who were willing to spill some teasers.

On the day, we spoke to Tisha Merry (Gemma), Anna Passey (Sienna), Oscar Curtis (Lucas), Charlotte Riley (Leah), Anya Lawrence (Vicky) and Kirsty-Leigh Porter (Leela) – keep an eye on our Hollyoaks page and social media accounts for the full chats in the next few days!

When we asked about rumours that Kieron Richardson (Ste) was being lined up for an immersive live scene later on, Anna told us: "He will be excited more than anything! He lives for something a bit different. I spend a lot of time with Kieron because we have our podcast together and we work together a lot on screen.

"He's just full of big ideas all the time, so I think he'll have a bit of nerves for it to go how he wants, but you couldn't pick anyone better to do it because he's so full of energy and good ideas. He'll just have a really good time doing it. Although he'll have FOMO that he hasn't been able to come on the boat with us!"

Charlotte added: "I've never heard anything like this! You never see any shows doing a live event and getting the fans together in a place where you don't know what to expect. It's a really exciting thing."

Those cast members then disappeared for the second half of the day, as they couldn't feature in the on-location shoot for continuity/plot reasons. Some were sad they'd miss out on seeing co-star Kieron's big moment, but the story comes first!

Once the interviews were done, it was time for a walk along the Chester Walls to see the sights of the city. Fans will know that on-location filming in Chester has become a rare occurrence for Hollyoaks in recent years, but it sounds like plans are afoot to address that, with a couple of more shoots on the way beyond this one.

As we neared the city centre, an important piece of the puzzle was hidden in plain sight – a van that would become crucial later on…

Once we reached the historic Chester Cross on Bridge Street, it was time for a moment that had been months in the making. In recent weeks, Hollyoaks had used What3Words to direct fans to this very location at this specific date and time, promising clues on Ste's disappearance.

This was a first for the show – bringing fans together in Chester for a live storyline event.

At first, it didn't seem too soap-focused as some street entertainment unfolded – including a town crier, and a man doing tricks on ladders! But then things took a very surprising turn…

The first Hollyoaks characters to appear were Maddox Keane and Kathleen-Angel McQueen. Following the recent storyline exploring Kathleen-Angel's singing talents, loyal friend Maddox welcomed her to perform in front of the crowd.

Kathleen-Angel's big moment was sadly spoiled by members of her chaotic family, though – as Theresa and Myra suddenly burst out of a church, rowing with the bride and groom! The bride was 'Chantelle McQueen', played by Amy Du Quesne.

While this moment has sparked online speculation about the wedding and future of the new characters, Digital Spy understands that its main purpose was to establish to onlookers that they were watching a live Hollyoaks storyline, before the main event began. So it may not be hugely relevant to the main show!

With McQueen chaos unfolding around us and the crowds getting bigger, your trusty DS/IS roving reporter then had to leg it down the street and hope for a decent spot when word spread that Ste was finally about to make an appearance.

As the driver of the van we'd spotted earlier clashed with a very vocal doughnut cellar, Ste took the opportunity to make a dramatic bid for freedom and escape from the vehicle.

Ste stumbled around the crowds, appearing disorientated as he passed over a note to someone which read: "Help me".

Mysterious men in high-vis jackets then ran over from the van, pulling Ste back inside. They assured everyone that Ste had downed too many drinks but was fine – a likely story…

In a flash, Ste was gone again – but the evidence remains, as our exclusive video recorded at the scene has already been viewed over 100,000 times on TikTok! (In retrospect, maybe we could have done more to help him, although that might have spoiled the storyline!)

What does it all mean and where does Ste go from here? Hopefully there'll be more answers next week, when the clips filmed in Chester are incorporated into Monday's episode as social media and camera footage.

Big thanks to Team Hollyoaks for including us on the day and always thinking outside the box – chasing soap characters around a Chester high street is a first, even for us.

The cast also did a great job with the daunting task of acting live on the street, then interacting with fans who'd taken the time to visit – posing for photos and chatting.

Hollyoaks' executive producer Hannah Cheers recently said: "We always think and talk about how we can innovate and tell a story differently and, in this instance, take a traditional mystery and bring it to life in a completely different way.

"We wondered how we would feel if we were sat down on a rainy day in our favourite café and one of our most-loved characters stumbled out, emerging into our world.

"The disappearance grew from there, knowing the live event would be at an integral point within that story. In 2026 people want connection and Hollyoaks can still do that."

Channel 4 commissioner Lucy Raffety added: "This was a fabulously creative and ambitious idea, brilliantly executed with zeal and passion by the Hollyoaks team, delivering original, memorable and innovative drama, as only Hollyoaks does."

Hollyoaks airs on Mondays-Wednesdays with its Channel 4 streaming premiere at 7am, then an E4 broadcast the same night at 7pm. Full episodes are also released on YouTube a week after their Channel 4 release.
