When Farah Khan revealed why Shilpa Shirodkar didn’t bag ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ with Shah Rukh Khan: ‘She was 100 kg, where would he stand?’

‘Chhaiya Chhaiya’ remains one of the most iconic songs in Hindi cinema, but the face associated with the track could have been very different. Before Malaika Arora became synonymous with the song, Farah Khan had considered Shilpa Shirodkar for the memorable dance number from Mani Ratnam’s ‘Dil Se’.

Years later, Farah opened up about the casting process and recalled why Shirodkar did not eventually feature in the song.

Her explanation centred on the practical challenges of filming a demanding dance sequence on top of a moving train.

Shilpa Shirodkar was considered for the iconic song

Farah, who choreographed ‘Chhaiya Chhaiya’, revisited the casting story during a conversation with Karanveer Mehra on her YouTube channel. She revealed that Shilpa was among the actresses she had approached for the song.“I came to Shilpa to ask her for ‘Chhaiya Chhaiya.’ But something must have happened to her because at that time, she was at least 100 kgs. So I thought, ‘How will she get on the train? And if she gets on, where will Shah Rukh stand?’”The sequence required the female performer to dance alongside

on top of a moving train, making physical movement and space important considerations during the shoot.

Raveena Tandon and Shilpa Shetty also turned it down

Shilpa Shirodkar was not the only actress considered before Malaika Arora eventually landed the part.

Farah had also approached Raveena Tandon and Shilpa Shetty, but both reportedly declined the opportunity for personal reasons. The role ultimately went to Malaika, whose energetic performance alongside Shah Rukh became one of the defining visuals of ‘Dil Se’. The song went on to achieve cult status and remains one of the most remembered dance numbers of the 1990s.

Shilpa later spoke about losing the opportunity

Shilpa Shirodkar herself addressed the episode during an interview with Siddharth Kannan.

She confirmed that she had been approached for ‘Chhaiya Chhaiya’ but believed her weight ultimately became the reason she was not selected.“I didn’t get it because I was fat. They just said that I am fat,” she recalled.Although missing the song was understandably disappointing, Shilpa said she chose to look at her career beyond that one opportunity.“I will always feel bad that I didn’t get ‘Chhaiya Chhaiya,’ but God gave me much more, and He is still giving me.”

She no longer remembers exactly what Farah told her

Shilpa also remembered the conversation she had with Farah at the time, although she admitted that the details had faded over the years.“She just said that we will work some other time because they are looking for someone else. ‘You are a little fatter.’ Something like this… I don’t even remember anymore. I know I missed it because I was fat.”

Shilpa continued to build a successful career

Missing out on one of Bollywood’s most iconic songs did not stop Shilpa from carving out a successful career.

She went on to appear in films including ‘Hum’, ‘Gopi Kishan’ and ‘Aankhein’.Decades later, she found herself back in the spotlight with her participation in ‘Bigg Boss 18’. Her stint on the reality show introduced her to a newer generation of viewers, while her candid personality and resilience earned her appreciation during her time inside the house.Although she did not win the reality show, Shilpa’s journey added another chapter to a career that had already spanned several decades.
