Translate

The second Durban High School Old Boy has been elected as Lord Mayor of London. Bronek Masojada joins the school’s alumni, Gavyn Arthur, in his role as international ambassador for Britain’s financial and professional-services sector.

The position is not to be confused with the Mayor of London, who is Sadiq Khan.

DURBAN HIGH SCHOOL CELEBRATES SECOND ALUMNUS TO BECOME LORD MAYOR OF LONDON

On its social media platforms, Durban High School celebrated the news that its alumnus, Bronek Masojada, has been elected the 698th Lord Mayor of London.

Masojada succeeds Dame Susan Langley and will assume office on 13 November.

The 1978 alumnus is the second Old Boy, behind Gavyn Arthur, who served as Lord Mayor of London between 2002 and 2003.

DHS hailed the move as a “remarkable distinction for our school and its proud Old Boys fraternity”.

Bronek Masojada is a Durban-born businessman who studied Civil Engineering at the University of KwaZulu-Natal before winning a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford.

He has worked in the insurance and financial sector over the past three decades and is active in civic life and community development.

His path to his new title was aided by his tenure as an Alderman of the City of London in 2019 and by his election as one of the City’s two Sheriffs, which he served between 2023 and 2024.

He then went through the City’s mayoral appraisal process, during which he was identified as a suitable candidate for progression to the mayoralty.

WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES?

The Lord Mayor of the City of London is the ceremonial and civic head of the City of London Corporation, which governs the historic financial district known as the Square Mile.

The Lord Mayor is elected for a one-year term, with their role focused on serving as an international ambassador for Britain’s financial and professional services industries, promoting trade, investment and business links around the world.

It is not to be confused with the Mayor of London, who is Sadiq Khan, who governs Greater London.
