American Girl dolls, the classic toys that have stolen the hearts of kids across the country since 1986, are already an iconic holiday essential. But this season, they’re getting a fresh dose of virality thanks to a new collaboration with J.Crew.
In partnership with the famous fashion brand, American Girl and J.Crew just dropped a line of clothes and accessories for kids and their dolls (and you won’t find any poke bonnets here).
Instead, you’ll see J.Crew’s signature cardigans, shrunken down to fit the 18-inch dolls and their human counterparts, little bubble skirts, and even a barn jacket made with a cotton shell. Prices vary depending on whether you’re shopping for your child or their doll, but there are some relatively affordable options, with select pieces starting at just $22.
Over the years, American Girl has released plenty of collections that let kids match their favorite dolls, but this is the brand’s first collaboration with J.Crew. And we think this one hits differently: The kids who grew up dressing their dolls are now old enough to shop J.Crew themselves (and foot the bill).
This launch lets them pass the American Girl tradition down to their own kids, nieces, nephews, or friends’ little ones, with a stylish, preppy twist.
P.S. — if you’re an adult who still wants more American Girl in your life, consider this your permission slip to buy yourself a doll. You have adult money now, after all.
In recent times, we’ve seen plenty of unexpected American Girl collaborations — including this one — but the brand’s partnerships aren’t the only things that have changed. So have the dolls themselves and the stories they tell. When American Girl first launched, its historical characters came with some decidedly heavy backstories, tackling everything from the Great Depression to slavery.
These days, American Girl dolls tend to focus more on hobbies and activities than centuries-old trauma. Take the brand’s newly released 2027 Girl of the Year, Daisy Davenport, for example. You can find out how to buy her here. She’s all about summer camp, fun, and friendship — a far cry from the hardships of the dolls from yesteryear.
However, if you’re still craving a little nostalgia from the earlier lineups, you can always purchase Samantha, The Next Chapter, a new novel from New York Times bestselling author Fiona Davis that follows a grown-up Samantha Parkington, one of the original American Girl characters.
