KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 — The Malaysian Association of Film Exhibitors (MAFE) has welcomed the exemption of entertainment duty for local film screenings and theatre performances in the Federal Territories from January 1, 2027.

The exemption was announced by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of Budget 2027, on Friday October 9.

In a statement today, MAFE said the move would support Malaysia’s creative industries and strengthen the local film ecosystem.

The association also welcomed the prime minister’s call for similar exemptions to be extended to all states.

MAFE said it would engage with state governments to encourage nationwide adoption of the exemption and work with the Ministry of Communications and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) to support its implementation.

The association said it remained committed to championing local content and supporting the growth of Malaysia’s film industry.

MAFE, also known as Persatuan Pemamer Filem Malaysia, represents major cinema operators and theatre chains across the country.
