Lilli Tagger, an 18-year-old from Austria, defeated 46-year-old Venus Williams 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round of the Guangzhou Open on Tuesday, dropping the tennis legend to 0-13 in singles this season.
The 28-year difference between the two was said to be the biggest-ever recorded between opponents in a WTA Tour match.
Tagger was born in 2008, the same year Williams collected the last of her seven Grand Slam singles crowns at Wimbledon.
Williams, currently ranked No. 599, was playing a singles match for the first time in two months, since her opening-round exit to Sofia Kenin at the U.S. Open. It was her 16th consecutive Tour-level singles defeat, a run stretching back to July last year.
