Netflix has dropped a dramatic teaser trailer for the fourth season of The Diplomat, along with an official release date announcement. Created and executive produced by showrunner Debora Cahn, the series is set to return on 15 October.

Season four of The Diplomat, described as "an unmissable portrait of two marriages", sees Keri Russell return as Ambassador Kate Wyler, alongside Rufus Sewell as Vice President Hal Wyler, Allison Janney as President Grace Penn, and Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn.

The synopsis reads: "In Season Four of The Diplomat, two marriages threaten to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save.

"While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Grace Penn and VP Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war.

"Kate and Todd, at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home."

In the newly released trailer, Kate says to her husband Hal: "I'm not trying to get out of the marriage. I'm trying to get back in. We do highs and really low lows. The fights are going to be spicy."

A defeated-looking Hal replies: "You can't keep doing this to me."

As the trailer draws to a close, Kate says: "I, Katherine Wyler, take you for better or for worse, worse, and worse."

Speaking to Tudum ahead of the new season, Cahn said she was "so excited" about upcoming episodes, teasing: "It's going to be a lot of fun.

"We get to the end of a season and I always think, 'Well, there's no way that we can do this again.' And then we dig back into it, and it's like, 'Oh my God, we have to keep going.'"

She added: "[Fans] should be worried. There’s plenty to worry about. It can be pretty chilling when you see who takes power and get the sense that they may be horrifically misusing it."

Season 4 of The Diplomat will premiere on Netflix on 15 October.
