Shetland star Alison O'Donnell's "gripping" final season gets dramatic first-look trailer

Shetland series 11 has unveiled a new trailer featuring the last appearance of Alison O'Donnell as Alison 'Tosh' McIntosh. The actor has been part of the crime drama since its start 13 years ago, however, she announced her departure earlier this year.

Of course, since it is a final season for O'Donnell, why not go out with a bang? And, according to this newly-released trailer, we're in for some serious drama when the team uncovers a skeleton in the boot of a car.

According to the plot synopsis, things appear to be more complicated than initially suspected, as this revelation unveils a "historic murder which will forever change the lives of all those connected in the present day".

"When a car is pulled from the water, a grim discovery is made – crammed in the boot are the decomposed, skeletal remains of an unknown male," it continues.

"The team’s search to uncover the victim’s identity, begins with a hunt for the vehicle’s owner – a respected, local GP who left the Isles under a cloud of troubled rumours nine years ago.

"As Calder and Tosh dig deeper into the enigmatic GP's state-of-mind and the lives of the loved ones he left behind, the investigation takes them to dark and dangerous places in their quest for the truth."

In an interview with the Radio Times, the actor said that this season had demanding a lot from her as a performer, as she said: "These were some of the most challenging scenes I've ever shot for the show."

Revealing nothing else but "the building of special sets, an incredible stunt artist, and some extremely deep emotional digging", she continued: "That's the thrilling side of it, but there were also many more thoughtful scenes with all the important people. It's all in there. I think it's a memorable exit. We'll see!"

When reflecting her decision to leave, she described her and her castmates Steven Robertson, Lewis Howden and Anne Kidd as being like "family", so filming her final scene was emotional for all of them.

She said: "It was really special, as I have such a close bond with both of them, and we were able to have the sort of intense conversations that you don't usually have in life, those conversations that can only really be managed in a moment like that. I'll cherish that day forever."

Shetland series 11 will premiere on 12 November at 9pm on BBC One.
