Backrooms is one of 2026's most surprising horror releases, taking fans of the genre on a terrifying journey through an endless maze of unsettling rooms, empty corridors, and yellowed walls. Based on the internet phenomenon surrounding the "Backrooms," the film turns the familiar liminal-space concept into a full-scale psychological horror story after a mysterious doorway appears beneath a furniture showroom.
The project started from humble beginnings and blew up on social media. Director Kane Parsons was still a teenager when his 2022 Backrooms found-footage short exploded on YouTube, eventually attracting the attention of A24 and evolving into his feature directorial debut. Released on May 29, 2026, the movie opened to more than $81 million domestically and ultimately surpassed $400 million worldwide, turning a relatively low-budget internet-horror adaptation into one of the year's biggest genre success stories.
If you're a fan of Parsons' debut horror release, The Backrooms are officially returning with a brand-new project titled Backrooms: Savior, officially releasing on March 8, 2027

The Backrooms are headed in a very different direction as the premise enters the gaming realm in Backrooms: Savior, an upcoming first-person tactical horror shooter from developer SuperPaprika available on Steam. The game puts players in a unique scenario where you can actually fight back to escape the Backrooms as opposed to feeling helpless and alone.
It promises a mix of shooting, exploration, survival, and search-and-rescue gameplay, with players venturing deeper into the Backrooms to find missing survivors before successfully extracting them to safety. That said, Backrooms: Savior functions largely on survival and extraction-shooter concepts, with limited ammo, stealth mechanics such as firing a weapon revealing the player's position, and some anomalous entities apparently can't be killed through firepower at all.
These enemies instead operate according to specific rules involving factors like sound, light, movement, and line of sight, forcing players to figure out how each encounter works, adding a sort of puzzle element to combat as well. Exploration is a centerpiece, as missions involve finding key items, unlocking routes, solving puzzles, and eventually escorting survivors back to safety.

Co-op appears to be a major part of the experience as well, with the game being built around teams carefully coordinating their movement through the Backrooms, although Steam also lists single-player, online co-op, and online PvP support. The environments will include both familiar Backrooms-style locations and originally designed spaces, while resource management and the use of sound and lighting are intended to maintain the underlying horror atmosphere.
Backrooms: Savior is currently scheduled to launch for Windows PC through Steam on March 8, 2027, and can already be wishlisted ahead of release. No price is currently available, and the Steam page does not have a console version noted in the plans at all, at least for now.
Importantly, despite arriving in the wake of Backrooms' theatrical success, the Steam listing does not identify Savior as an adaptation of or tie-in to Kane Parsons' movie, positioning it instead as a separate game built around the wider Backrooms concept.
