‘Sons of Anarchy’ Spinoff ‘Legends’ Ordered With Charlie Hunnam, Original Cast Returning — With a Wild Twist

FX has ordered a wildly original “meta-thriller” spinoff from SoA star Charlie Hunnam.

The limited series Legends will reunite the original cast of the hit motorcycle club crime drama, only this time they’ll be playing fictionalized versions of themselves.

The official description: “When the cast of Sons of Anarchy reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.”

In addition to having Hunnam return as the lead, the limited series will bring back Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi. Additional cast will be announced in the coming weeks (we can only hope for Taylor Sheridan, who has made no secret of his gripes about his years acting on Sons).

“When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision,” said Nick Grad, FX Entertainment President. “Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.”

The clever idea gets around the biggest hurdle of bringing back the Sons cast — most of the major characters were killed off during the course of the show. Even Hunnam’s character, whose arc was the main story that threaded the dark and violent 2008-2014 series, received a sendoff in the finale.

Legends was developed by Hunnam and Jonathan Groff, who executive produce with Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel and Jackie Cohn. (SoA series creator Kurt Sutter is not involved). FX Productions and 20th Television will produce the series and will stream on FX and Hulu.

Hunnam is returning to FX on the heels of his acclaimed performance in Monster: The Ed Gein Story, for which he was nominated for an Emmy. He is currently in production on the upcoming BBC series adaptation of John le Carré’s novel, Legacy of Spies.

Sons of Anarchy was a massive hit for FX, running for 92 episodes across seven seasons. The show starred Hunnam as Jax Teller, a man who takes over a California Central Valley motorcycle club outlaw that was previously run by his father. At the time, the show became FX’s highest-rated series, surpassing hits like The Shield, Nip/Tuck and Rescue Me.

Sons spawned a successful spin-off series in 2018, Mayans M.C., which followed the Mayans Motorcycle Club and starred J.D. Pardo. Mayans M.C. ran for five seasons and concluded in 2023.
