Paul Mashatile spotted for first time since surgery

Former president Thabo Mbeki paid a courtesy visit to Deputy President Paul Mashatile at his home on Thursday as Mashatile continues his recovery from a recent medical procedure.

Mashatile remains on medical leave on the advice of his doctors and has said his recovery is progressing well.

‘Cordial and assuring’

In a social media post following Mbeki’s visit, Mashatile said the former president was accompanied by Thabo Mbeki Foundation chief executive officer Max Boqwana.

“The visit by the struggle stalwart was cordial and assuring,” Paul Mashatile said.

“I look forward to returning to my duties in full, serving our nation with renewed energy and commitment.”

Mashatile also expressed his gratitude for the visit and support, adding: “Inkomu, and may God bless South Africa.”

Mashatile continues recovery

Mashatile recently confirmed that he had undergone what he described as a minor medical procedure.

He said at the time that he was regaining strength each day but would remain on medical leave until his doctors determined that he was ready to return to work.

Government business has continued through his office during his absence.

Cyril Ramaphosa advised to rest

The deputy president’s recovery comes as President Cyril Ramaphosa has also been advised by his medical team to rest and recover after returning to South Africa from the BRICS leaders’ summit in India.

Ramaphosa was booked off from public engagements and asked cabinet ministers to represent him at scheduled events where possible.

Ramaphosa previously visited Mashatile on 4 August and said he was pleased with his recovery and had been assured that the deputy president would soon return to work.

For now, Mashatile remains at home while following medical advice, with the deputy president indicating that he is looking forward to resuming his official duties once cleared by his doctors.
